Marc van den Homberg is Applied Researcher and Scientific Lead of the 510 humanitarian data analytics team of the Netherlands Red Cross (70% of his time) and does research for Practical Action on Technology Justice for Climate Change. He focuses on how (big) data and information management can improve disaster and climate risk management, whereby data preparedness is essential.

Marc started his career at the research department of the Dutch incumbent operator in the area of mobile and wireless technologies before moving to the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, TNO, where he led and co-founded the ICT for development (ICT4D) team in 2006. He has been passionate about this field ever since, working on pro-poor ICT and data related research and innovation with a variety of stakeholders and for donors such as NGOs (Cordaid, Warchild), MFA, World Bank and the EU. In 2016, Marc worked with Dalberg for UN OCHA and MFA on a vision for and the feasibility of an entity to improve the use of data across the humanitarian ecosystem. Marc has multiple short and mid-term field experiences in Africa (Burundi, Burkina Faso, Malawi and South Africa) and Asia (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, The Philippines and Vietnam). Marc holds the disaster management certificate from IFRC/Tata Institute of Social Sciences, an MBA with a specialization on emerging economies and a PhD in physics. Marc has lived and worked in Belgium, Germany and the US and currently lives in France.
