First of all, I must say I really like the main idea of that project. As youth worker myself, I know the power and positive impact of non-formal education for promoting social challenge issues. But, I have some concerns, 1st I see you also recognize the issue of carbon emissions from flights. Is for me at least problematic from one side to try to teach people to more environmental friendly behaviors and from the other side to use the same unsustainable practices. Moreover, I believe this project is quite costly, only for somehow reach people. Additionally, I can't see how these only 25-30 participants will make the after project impact. I mean it will be spent so many resources but how many people in two or five years will be influenced by it in order to change behaviors? It seems, like a cool luxury long-scale trip with an environmental content.

Hi Anastasia, thanks for your comments.

  • Regarding the flights issue, we will plan and partner to reach carbon neutrality, so that the project is not environmentally unsustainable.
  • We are structuring our business plan on a hybrid model (both nonprofit and for-profit). We want to be able to fund most of our expenses through the programme's fee. However, we also want to give scholarships for youth that cannot afford the costs, and work on partnerships to drop costs to lower rates to all participants.
  • About the long-term impact, you can find more information on the impact section and on the part in which we describe the YCL Network. In a nutshell, the idea is to identify emerging climate leaders and empower them to take their work to the next level, either through an individual project or by working in key organizations addressing climate change. Additionally, the videos and other materials produced during the expedition will also reach out to a wider audience, sensitizing them about climate issues. These materials might also be a source of revenue, helping to lower overall costs.
