Lynn Fitzpatrick is a passionate sailor and champion of inclusion.  In 2013, when African Diaspora Maritime gained standing with the 34th America’s Cup following a New York State Appellate Court decision, she became the first woman in the history of the oldest contested trophy in international sport, to register a team.

Fitzpatrick earned her MSRE from MIT’s Center for Real Estate in 1991 and went on to become a community revitalization and waterfront redevelopment specialist contributing to the revitalization of a number of Southeast Florida and Caribbean waterfront communities. Her writings about every sailing event taking place in Miami caught the attention of Miami’s elected officials, sailors around the world, and the world governing body of sailing. Liking her style, sailing’s world governing body recommended her to the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee.  In 2007 and 2008, she worked directly for the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee as sailing’s sports information specialist.  Following her Olympic and Paralympic effort, she went on to cover the America’s Cup, become the executive director of a team, and broke a barrier by registering the first primarily African American team in the event’s 160-year history.  She has worked tirelessly to activate the team in Baltimore, MD.

In attending and contributing to sailing and sporting events worldwide, Fitzpatrick has always kept her eyes peeled for activities that engage non-sailors and sailors alike.   While the on-the-water activities are the headliners, it’s the landside events that must draw, engage, and entertain the crowds.

Fitzpatrick and her colleagues plan to introduce Healthy Oceans Maritime Festivals to port cities in the United States and set the stage for people all over the world to celebrate Healthy Oceans Day to the scale that is achievable and appropriate for each community.
