Dr. Reckien is an Assistant Professor for Climate Change at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-Information Management (PGM) of the University of Twente in the Netherlands (NL). She is also Coordinating Chapter Lead Author for the Second Assessment Report for Climate Change in Cities (ARC3-2 of the Urban Climate Change Research Network).

Before joining the team in NL, Dr. Reckien has worked as Senior Climate Impact Scientist at Climate Analytics Berlin/Germany, 2 years at the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions at Columbia University’s Earth Institute in New York City/USA, and 12 years at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research/Germany. During that time she has also worked as Social Development Specialist for the Asian Development Bank.

Dr. Reckien received her PhD (magna cum laude) in Geography in 2007 from the University of Marburg, Germany, in cooperation with the John-Moores-University Liverpool, UK. Her PhD focused on 'Intra-regional migration in formerly industrialised regions and Qualitative Modelling of household location decisions'. After her PhD, she kept the interest for urban areas and further specialized at the interface of climate change and urban research, climate change impacts, differential vulnerabilities and adaptation across socio-economic groups, climate change gaming, climate change migration, and climate change policy and practice in intercultural comparisons. Her latest research focuses on method development, e.g. to assess extreme weather impacts and socially sensible adaptation options in urban areas in Europe, India and the US. She also analyzed the preparedness of European cities with respect to climate change adaptation and mitigation planning and policy.

Dr. Reckien’s scientific publication record comprises over 40 publications, including 13 peer-reviewed journal papers, a number of book chapters, and an editorial of a special issue.
