Member Profile
Nuclear Energy and Environmental speaker and author Dr. James Conca is Senior Scientist for UFA Ventures, Inc. in the Tri-Cities, Washington. Conca combines the passion of activism with a 30-year career as a research scientist to create a new dynamic for discussing complex topics like energy and its effects on society and the planet. By approaching the subject from the different perspectives of global poverty, debunking technological myths and achieving a just and sustainable energy mix, Conca and his co-author, Dr. Judith Wright, have developed a sustainable and achievable energy mix that meets most of the serious environmental, climate and economic goals set out by government, industry and environmental stakeholders. This mix is outlined in their book, titled The GeoPolitics of Energy: Achieving a Just and Sustainable Energy Distribution by 2040 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1419675885/sr=1-10/qid=1195953013/)
Prior to re-joining UFA Ventures, Conca was Director of the Center for Laboratory Sciences on the Campus of Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA. Before that, Conca was Director of the New Mexico State University Environmental Monitoring and Research Center, the independent monitoring facility for the country’s only deep geologic nuclear repository. He came to NMSU from Los Alamos National Laboratory where he was Project Leader for Radionuclide Geochemistry on the Yucca Mt. Project. Previously, Conca was on the faculty at Washington State University, President of UFA Ventures, Inc., a DOE spin-off company for technology development, and a scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and NASA.
Conca recently became a Science Contributor to Forbes on energy issues at http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesconca/. Conca obtained a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology (1985), MS in Planetary Science (1981), and BS in Geology/Biology from Brown University (1979).
