Finalist Evaluation

This is an interesting project and strong proposal that aims at improving the resilience of urban communities to climate change by tackling the issue of waste management and promoting a combination waste sorting, composting and local permaculture. It is very valuable that the project team has already established some indicators to monitor the effectiveness of the actions to be implemented, and even better, that monitoring and data acquisition is already integrated in the project.

The project is interesting in how it links the permaculture techniques with waste management. Can there be a stronger link made to land restoration through this process?

Very good proposal with three integrated lines of action (urban waste management through composting, permaculture initiatives, and data collection for scaling) to be applied to a neighbourhood in Bogota, yet to be identified. Although the project is convincingly based on transformative actions, there would be a need of a robust theory of change: what would be the interest of the inhabitants of the neighbourhood to engage in such a project? What would be the obstacles? would there be any urban policy constraints? etc. Without this, the feasibility is difficult to judge.

This is a strong proposal although politically challenging due to the backing it would need from the municipal government and ideally the federal government for it to be successful. As stated in the proposal, one of the main challenges is changing the mindset of the members of the community and more could be elaborated in the proposal on how this would be done. A better understanding of why Permacultural initiatives have or have not been picked up by other cities would also be helpful.

This proposal is relevant and specific to its area of implementation. The authors mention the difficulty of changing local community mindsets; how will the project team address this barrier and secure local ownership of the project? What are the projected costs of the initiative and how will the project team secure any additional funding? With regards to collecting compost, how will this be achieved? How frequently will the compost be collected? Once made, will the community use its own compost or will it be taken to a larger facility? How will the audio/visual equipment and the podcasts be used and who will be the target audience?
