Judges'' comments


This is an interesting project, but it raises an awful lot of questions. A selection are: 1. How does this app fit into what is already being done, for example by national meteorological and agriculture departments? 2. Where would the meteorological information be sourced from? 3. How would the meteorological information be downscaled to the local, farm, level? 4. Why isn't the app intended to support carbon farming initiatives to support national greenhouse gas reduction measures? Integrating adaptation and mitigation in this way would be very beneficial. 5. Have the authors looked at how good the translation packages would be? 6. Have the authors scoped whether anything similar already exists. 7. Why the emphasis on arid and semi-arid areas (much of which is given over to extensive very low-intensity pastoralism)?

Generally, this seems to be a weather forecast and emergency response app for farmers – not exactly a tool to help farmers assess their climate vulnerability and then make medium and long term decisions based on their risk level. Overcoming the language barrier with multiple translations is a strength of this proposal. There could be an issue of liability if the app has a feature for users to “send climate hazards in their location and request for aid as shown below” – how does the app forward this information to emergency agencies? There are multiple initiatives already going on in Kenya and East Africa by organisations such as WMO's Climate Information in Decision-Making which includes translating info into local languages on agriculture-climate change.
