Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

This project proposes building an online platform (RAC - the acronym is not spelled out, but we deduce "Restorative Agricultural Crops") which uses artificial intelligence to suggest alternative restorative crops in agricultural systems which are expected to be negatively affected by climate change. There is little explanation of what is intended and how it would be implemented. It is not clear why this would require artificial intelligence, nor is it clear how the subsequent management plan would be created. The budget is very large for the objectives, and the need/objectives of the various components is not specified (Why, for example, such a large portion of the budget for management, what data are to be gathered, why both programmers and outsourcing of platform building, and so on.)

Outstanding questions include: 1) Why, given number of uses, this would be delivered as a tool, 2) how this doesn't duplicate the work of agricultural extension departments, 3) whether you would move to a new crop in advance of any projected climate change - particularly given that rainfall projections are still quite uncertain, this might be a high-risk strategy, 4) where the climate change data would come from, and 5) whether having high resolution climate projections gives you a 'better' idea of what future crops to grow - just because the projection is more precise doesn't mean it's more accurate.
