Pitch

Taking the methodology we have developed with a number of sectors, how do we embed this in each sector & into the broader community

Description

Summary

EPICCA embarked on developing a region wide, cross sectoral climate change adaptation plan. Recognising our region has a very clear perception of itself as innovative leaders in all sectoral areas, we were concerned that traditional adaptation planning approaches would not adequately engage key regional decision makers.

EPICCA chose to adopt an adaptation pathways approach. Working from a conceptual understanding of adaptation pathways, an applied adaptation pathways methodology was developed and implemented. This is understood to be one of the first such approaches in Australia.  The approach combined current conceptual thinking on adaptation pathways, best available science on the impacts of climate change on key sectors in the region with a tailored engagement process that was delivered through interviews and workshops with key regional leaders.

The result has been the development of a series of adaptation pathways for key sectors on the Eyre Peninsula that express the range and timing of adaptation options and assist in identifying region wide and sector specific adaptation priorities, now and into the future.

Category of the action

Mitigation/Adaptation, Changing public attitudes about climate change

What actions do you propose?

EPICCA has seen a significant shift in the understanding and behaviour from stakeholders into now seeing decision making across timelines and informing their longer term practical application and implementation in the face of uncertainty.  We now need to embed this approach into the wider community by implementation of the following actions:

Action: Future adaptation planning should be guided by a principled approach that seeks to build economic resilience and focuses on preparing for future climate change rather than repairing damage after impacts occurs.

Action: Priority adaptation actions that support multiple sectors on the Eyre Peninsula are the development of an Integrated Management Strategy for Spencer Gulf and Regional Transport Infrastructure Plan

Action: Some large scale adaptation options within sectors will require preliminary work to commence within those sectors now if the adaptation option is to be available by the time it is required to adapt to future climate change impacts.

Action: Invest in maturing the enabling conditions for adaptation in the region and promote sectoral planning activities that take account of cross-sectoral interactions. Particular emphasis should be on further evolving the regional governance approach and training the next generation of industry and community leaders

Who will take these actions?

EPICCA  "Eyre Peninsula Integrated Climate Change Alliance" is a formal agreement between the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association (11 Councils), Eyre Development Regional Development Board, Eyre Peninsula Natural resource management Board,  the South Australian State Government, and industry sectors including agriculture and fisheries. Action will be taken individually and collectively across sectors.

Where will these actions be taken?

Regional Eyre Peninsula  South Australia.

What are other key benefits?

the increased community capacity to operate and function effectively in the context of  climate change.

This collaborative methodology will lead to the development of a  low carbon  regional economic environment.

What are the proposal’s costs?

Time line

The implementation of the plan actions ...0ne to five years.

The development and of a vision and implementation of a low carbon regional economy over five to fifty years.
