Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

The Climate CoLab adaptation contest team appreciates the time that you took to submit this proposal. The intention of this proposal is good. It would be valuable to have broadcasts or information packages that could help local farmers make smart choices in light of the possible impacts of climate change. However, it is not so easy to gather local area forecasts of likely climate change impacts (over the next 10 years) and suggest best ways of coping with these in terms of crop choice, crop timing, soil enhancement, use of pesticides and herbicides, water saving strategies, etc.

The judges also feel there are some questionable assumptions. The proposal implies that gathering data about local climate change impacts in Ghana and specifying appropriate changes in farming strategies will be non-controversial. That may not necessarily be true. Who is going to do this technical work? Why will their analyses be accepted? It is not so easy to take technical analyses (assuming they are done by legitimate sources using scientific methods that are defensible) and translate these into informative broadcasts or articles for the general public. It will also be important to implement an on-going evaluation scheme of some sort so that development of subsequent public information packages could reflect what is learned from the first round of broadcasts.

The judges encourage you to consider these factors and evolve your proposal, as we sure would like to see something like this proceed. While your proposal is not advancing to the semi-finals this year, the contest team wishes you the best of luck in your endeavors and would love to see a proposal from you next year incorporating this feedback.
