Thank you for submitting your proposal to this Climate CoLab contest. Because you had submitted it before July 18th, the contest Judges and Fellows were able to review your proposal and provide you with some feedback, which we have included below. We hope that you will use it to further develop your work before the August 31 deadline. On that date at midnight Eastern Time, your proposal will be locked and considered in final form. The Judges will then select which proposals will continue to the Finalists round. Finalists are eligible for the contest’s Judges Choice award, as well as for public voting to select the contest’s Popular Choice award. The Winners will receive a special invitation to attend selected sessions at MIT’s SOLVE conference and showcase their work before key constituents in a workshop the next day. A few select Climate CoLab winners will join distinguished SOLVE attendees in a highly collaborative problem-solving session. In addition, if your plan is included in one or more winning global plans, you will receive Climate CoLab Points, and the top point-getters will receive shares of a cash prize of $10,000. Thank you for your great work and good luck! 2015 Climate CoLab Judges & Fellows Judges' feedbacks Judge: Joisa Dutra Feasibility of the actions proposed It is difficult to assess the feasibility of the proposal. In particular there is the need to assess not only to get assistance from a developed country but also the political feasibility of implementing it in a developing region. This process may be opposed on the grounds that would amount to select a low (er) income country/region as a lab. Novelty of the proposed ideas The proposal does not clarify the relationship of the different actions. One of them, the dissemination of solar panels requires considerable amount of investments and it is not clear the singular position of this particular proposal to bring this particular change (induce this investments in a cost-effective manner). Impact on climate change and desirability of other impacts (economic and social) The solar panels action certainly has a positive effect on climate changes and it may be economically beneficial by lowering electricity costs to users. However, there is a lot of uncertainty about the effectiveness of the artificial volcano. Presentation quality The proposal could be improved by clarifying its building blocks and the relation among them, such as the lifestyle changes. It would be useful to discuss how would this different actions compound a coherent proposal. Fellows' Feedbacks Fellow: Maruf Sanni This proposal is very good with a lot of potentials. However, in order to be strongly considered, it would require the details of the countries where these artificial volcanoes would be built. There is also the need to provide more information on the physics behind the ideas in the proposal most especially how the artificial volcanoes will be created and how it will function. This proposal will also benefit from other ideas from different workspaces where this proposal will be linked to other proposals. The significance of the impact of the project will also be clearer with the author could work with the impact assessment team of the Climate CoLab to calculate how much of sunlight the aerosols could reflect. Fellow: Leslie Labruto In order to advance this proposal, we need to have a clearer understanding of the other affects SO2 has on the atmosphere and how it would affect weather patterns given the high volume of SO2 this proposal expects to project into the atmosphere. Based on historical precedents, this is unlikely to take place. Further, the proposal does not elaborate on why this is for a developing context. More details are needed. The costs of the proposal are also very high. Lastly, covering all buildings with solar panels would be an enormously expensive undertaking, and there is no financial planning in the proposal to support this line of work.

Impact Assessment Fellow
This is an interesting idea - though because inducing volcanic eruption would not reduce greenhouse gas emission, I have modeled the impact via a proxy of 50% change in land use, to capture the effect of increased albedo and additional solar panels. (See the impact tab) That corresponds to about 0.86 gigaton of CO2 reduction.
