What is G-7 Countries?

The Group of Eight (G8) was the name of a forum for the governments of a group of eight leading industrialized countries that was originally formed by six leading industrialized countries and subsequently extended with two additional members.[1] Russia, which was invited to join as the last member, was excluded from the forum by the other members on March 24, 2014, as a result of its involvement in the 2014 Crimea crisis in Ukraine.[2] Thus the group now comprises seven nations and will continue to meet as the G7 group of nations.

The forum originated with a 1975 summit hosted by France that brought together representatives of six governments: France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, thus leading to the name Group of Six or G6. The summit became known as the Group of Seven or G7 the following year with the addition of Canada. The G7 is composed of the seven wealthiest developed countries on Earth (by national net wealth or by GDP[3]), and it remained active even during the period of the G8. Russia was added to the group from 1998 to 2014, which then became known as the G8. The European Union is represented within the G8 but cannot host or chair summits.[4] The 40th summit became the first time the European Union able to host and chair a summit.

"G8" can refer to the member states in aggregate or to the annual summit meeting of the G8 heads of government. The former term, G6, is now frequently applied to the six most populous countries within the European Union. G8 ministers also meet throughout the year, such as the G7/8 finance ministers (who meet four times a year), G8 foreign ministers, or G8 environment ministers.

Why the Absence of Climate Change at the G8 Summit is No Big Deal

BRUSSELS—The G8 Summit agenda is as good a snapshot as any of the preoccupations of the global elite. Over the past few years, the summits offered opportunities for the leaders of world’s largest industrialized economies to reflect — and occasionally even to commit to new actions — on international terrorism, the global financial crisis, and other issues of the moment. So what does it mean when an important topic is dropped from the official agenda, as happened last week in Northern Ireland when climate change failed to make the cut ?

Turning away from the G8, however, there are reasons to be optimistic that countries — especially the United States — may be about to reengage on this issue. President Barack Obama was not just playing to a sympathetic gallery when he pledged further action on climate change in Berlin on Wednesday. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry published an op-ed on the same day placing climate change at the top of the foreign-policy agenda of the United States, and noted the agreement between President Obama and President Xi Jinping of China last week on the phasing out of a class of highly potent greenhouse gases. This agreement, which could remove the equivalent of two years’ worth of greenhouse gases between now and 2050, was a diplomatic coup that was barely noticed outside environmental circles. The White House also signalled imminent action on emissions from new and existing power stations under existing clean air rules, which would send a powerful signal to investors to favor low-carbon energy infrastructure. Through diplomacy, regulations, and other measures that bypass the political stalemate in the U.S. Congress, the Obama administration could do much to cut U.S. emissions.

Thomas Legge is a senior program officer with the German Marshall Fund of the United States’ Climate and Energy Program, based in Brussels.

What are other key benefits?

Outcomes:

- Hard copy letters is more powerful than soft copy letter( as we usually carried out through Internet). It will directly affect the reader with best and possible condition.

- Media Coverage

Sending letter via post to the G-7 Head of State will gather enormous media attention as most of the Government website publishes the suggestion, complaints or inquiry by general public in their website. It is usual that they will going to share our initiative in their website, Facebook and Twitter. This proves our impact of project.

We even ask to popular media to share our project.

-This would be entirely new initiative especially from Nepalese youth in the form of hard copy letters to G-7 Head of State(There is no such initiative from Nepal. It is unique)
