Member Profile
"Guakía" is a word from Tainos, the indigenous people of the Hispaniola island, which means "we". We are a Dominican not for profit organization that promotes development and empowerment of local communities through sustainable management of natural resources. Guakía Ambiente organizes local groups in processes which contribute to improve human development, expanding available alternatives.
Our mission is to improve people livelihoods and promote environmental sustainability through research, facilitation of community initiatives and promotion of local empowerment.
During these years, in synergy with numerous stakeholders, at national and international level, we have developed numerous successful initiatives, with special focus in community micro hydro power generation.
Specifically, with a focus of local and individual self-determination, equity and synergy, learning by doing, learning from mistakes, and sustainable development, we have consolidated three lines of intervention:
- Community renewable energy sources systems, including productive use of electricity;
- Promotion and strengthening of networks;
- Alternative education, through the model of "University of the Field".
In our action, we count on the support of numerous partners, with which we work in synergy, based on common principles of intervention. Our main partners are: the GEF Small Grants Programme, the Interamerican Foundation, Fundación Popular, the Ministry of Environment, the Unit of Rural and Suburban Electrification, the Australian Embassy, numerous local NGOs, Community Based Organization and private entities.
Guakía Ambiente has been expanding a platform of network way of working, taking a significant role at a national such as an international level. Together with the GEF Small Grants Programme, we have become a reference at a global level in theme of community micro hydro power initiatives, especially regarding the sustainability and self-management of the implemented model.
