José Mercado is a Research Associate at IKEM. He has been working in the field of low-carbon and climate-resilient urban development since 2009. He is currently involved in the Kopernikus-Project ENavi as a part of IKEM´s energy efficiency team focusing on energy efficiency in the building sector and developing renewable energy projects in the Latin American and the Caribbean Region.
He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Sciences at the Universidad Mayor de San Simon, Bolivia. He has a Master´s degree in Human Settlements and Environment from the Universidad Católica de Chile and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. He wrote his doctoral dissertation about the role of energy efficiency in the private housing sector in Santiago de Chile.
His academic career is complemented by extensive professional experience in international organisations, such as the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), where he worked as a consultant in the field of residential energy efficiency and sustainable housing.
