Ian is a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) and Berkeley Graduate Fellow and in the Energy and Resources Group and a member of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at UC Berkeley. His research interests lie at the intersection of energy systems, regional climate change impacts, and global health. He is a scientist on the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE) Arctic project, investigating biogeochemical factors governing energy and gas fluxes in arctic tundra environments from the plant scale to the climate model grid-cell scale. He is also interested in developing data-driven tools for characterizing spatial and seasonal snowpack variation, in order to improve forecasts of streamflow, water availability, and hydropower production. Ian is a member of the inaugural cohort for the Environment and Society: Data Sciences for the 21st Century (DS421) National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) at UC Berkeley. He is also a co-founder and project manager of Tiny House in My Backyard (THIMBY), a student organization designing and building a mobile, affordable, net-zero-energy house on the Berkeley Global Campus. Prior to arriving at UC Berkeley, Ian received his BA from Harvard University in Applied Mathematics and spent three years modeling trends in global disease and injury burden at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Outside of academia, Ian is a member of the Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol, and he writes about environmental issues and mountain adventures on his blog at TheInertia.com.
