Ms Yong assumed the position of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health on 1st July 2005. Her work at the Ministry involves developing Singapore's health services to provide good quality, affordable healthcare to its people, to strive for medical excellence and to develop Singapore as a medical hub. The ministry aims to keep Singaporeans healthy, with holistic efforts that include promotion of healthy living and ageing, prevention of disease, management of public health outbreaks, regulation of professional standards, effective healthcare financing, and delivery of integrated care in a cost-effective and high quality manner. Concurrent with her role as Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry, Ms Yong is Chairman of MOH Holdings, which holds the assets of the public sector healthcare institutions in Singapore.
Ms Yong holds several other appointments in the Singapore public sector, including Chairman of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (iDA), where she had previously been Chief Executive. iDA is the national's IT development agency and telecommunications industry regulator, responsible for developing Singapore as a globally competitive infocommunications hub and leading e-community. Concurrently, Ms Yong serves on the Boards of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Totalisator Board and the Civil Service College.
During her civil service career, Ms Yong has served in the Ministries of Finance, Trade & Industry, Home Affairs, Communications & IT, Manpower (as its Permanent Secretary and Chairman of the Workforce Development Agency), and was Principal Private Secretary to then-Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
