As a former Microsoft employee and financial advisor there always was a sense of something missing in corporate culture. When I took over a branch office for Edward Jones in a small town on the central California coast I found streets full of potholes, boarded up windows on local shops, a street dividing Hispanics with whites and gangs taking over downtown when the sun went down.
How was I going to get clients? Where are people that would come to my office? I decided to start a mural society. We commenced to paint the town, cleaned up the local parks, and put mosaics on the freeway overpasses. The result was a conversation between whites, Hispanics and their environment. Two years later Hispanic businesses increased by 67% and our community was a cultural destination.
This is when I understood that you cannot legislate behavior modification. It has to become attractive enough to be a win win for everyone.
