Nick Hedley (Ph.D. Washington) is the founding director of the Spatial Interface Research Lab (SIRL), and Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Hedley is an expert in geovisualization, geovisual analysis and communication using 3D interface technologies.

Dr. Hedley and his team of researchers design and develop new ways to represent and analyze complex spatial phenomena in three and four dimensions, delivering interactive visualizations of them using: 2D and 3D GIS; virtual environments; 3D game engines; mixed reality; and mobile augmented reality. His team's numerous projects explore the ways to improve how spatial science is transmitted to society in support of engagement, dialogue, awareness of risk and environmental change. These works combine geographical information science, geovisualization, spatial interface research and spatial cognition.

He has designed and developed visualization interfaces for many contexts, including analysis and communication of  tsunami risks, marine debris, and climate change futures. Dr. Hedley is the leading intelligence behind the geovisualization systems developed for CoastaL Impact Visualization Environment (CLIVE) - a new geo-visualization project aiming to translate our best climate science into societal understanding of the coastal impacts of global environmental change at local scales.

Dr. Hedley's projects have been funded by NSF, EPA, DoE, NRCSE and EERI in the U.S., by SSHRC, NSERC RTI, CWN, GEOIDE and NSS in Canada, and by CRCSI in New Zealand.

Dr. Hedley has consulted for numerous organizations in the broadcasting, public education, mining and movie industries, including BBC (UK), BHP (Australia) and for several major science museums, including the Boston Museum of Science. He was the lead designer/creator of the augmented reality exhibit seen in Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination - which toured North America between 2005-2008, and internationally after 2009.
