Dr. Sgouridis is Associate Professor at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI) and heads the Institute Center for Smart and Sustainable Systems (iSmart). His research interests focus on understanding sustainable energy transitions using socio-technical systems modeling. He has worked on sustainable transportation systems and sustainable energy systems management. Dr. Sgouridis is involved in projects and writes about the energy currency concept, electric vehicle adoption, sustainable aviation, and local and global sustainable energy transitions. Previously, he initiated the development of the  Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium. He has supported the Zayed Future Energy Prize as a chair of the review committee (2nd tier in a 4 tier process) for years 2010/11/12. Prior to his role at MI, Dr. Sgouridis supported governmental and private organizations including the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Port Authority of Thessaloniki, and the Hellenic Army. He holds a PhD in Engineering Systems (MIT-2007), MSc in Technology and Policy  and MSc in Transportation (MIT-2005) and a BS (Hons.) in Civil & Env. Engineering (1999-Aristotle University). When not in front of a class or a computer, he enjoys  climbing rocky areas from RAK to Tajikistan and occasionally biking in the desert.
