George Shultz has had a distinguished career in public service. He served as U.S. Secretary of Labor from 1969-1970, Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1970-1972 and Secretary of the Treasury from 1972-1974, all under President Nixon. In 1974 he left government to become executive vice president of Bechtel Group, a large engineering and services company, later to become president. In 1982 he returned to government as U.S. Secretary of State under President Reagan from 1982-1989. Since then Shultz has continued to express his views on foreign policy and economics. He graduated from Princeton University in 1942 with a BA in Economics and earned his PhD in 1949 from MIT in Industrial Economics.
