Member Profile
I received a BSc in Geology and Oceanography and a PhD in Marine Geochemistry at University College of Swansea in Wales. After an 18 month research fellowship at Imperial College, London, I worked for nearly 10 years for a local authority organisation in North-West England dealing with fisheries and marine pollution issues. I joined the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s Directorate Fisheries Research in 1986 as a Licensing/Enforcement Officer initially dealing with the licensing of industrial waste disposal at sea and then with the disposal of dredged material and sewage sludge at sea.
I have 27 years experience in an advisory role to UK government departments on issues relating to the environmental impacts of dredging, disposal, marine aggregate extraction and construction activities. I was the Chairman of the Scientific Groups of the London Convention and London Protocol from 2008 to 2011 and the Chairman of the OSPAR Convention’s Biodiversity Committee that deals with species/habitat protection issues as well as the impacts of human activities from 2006 to 2010.
I work for Cefas, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, that is the marine environment and fisheries agency of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
