Convincing project with some convincing complements in the last version. The argument about complexification of the irrigated perimeter is well presented and the proposed time line of implementation is reasonable. The feasibility which depends on a robust theory of change and on established partnerships with both grass root organizations and political actors is not completely convincing.

Very interesting proposition aiming at integrated landscape complexification in the Niger River delta in Mali, an extremely problematic region facing growing combined climate and demography constraints. The integration at large scale of hydro and agriculture infrastructures is one of the good ways to promote a much-needed transformation of production systems, with the diversification of productions and value chains. Incidentally, the rationale of the project could be improved with more insights on positive aspects of ecosystemic services complimentary at landscape level. However, the feasibility of the project is difficult to judge because of some major missing elements: why policy makers would be interested in this landscape complexification? How local communities would be interested and involved in this project? A plausible theory of change has to be developed at a time when huge chunks of land are leased in the region to big private companies basing their production on monocropping and economy of scale? How to balance the expected positive impacts for the zone in terms of ecosystemis richness and resilience which is a very long term and immediate profit ? To go forward, it seems to me that this project would need to establish strong partnerships with policy makers with vision, and organizations, with proven success in development projects in the zone and experience in participatory approaches.

This is an interesting proposal that focuses on the early sustainable influence, design and implementation of agricultural developments. The focus on local communities and women is important. The proposal would benefit from further information on what the main obstacles are to implementation - given that many agricultural developments funded by donors such as USAID would share the same goals as those outlined above.

The proposal is innovative in its integration of landscape architecture into agroforestry and irrigation projects in the Sahel. It is context-specific and demonstrates familiarity with the intervention area. Further, it is very well-laid out. One point of feedback would be to address potential barriers to implementation. What is the potential community reception of this change in approach to traditional agricultural infrastructure?
