Finalist Evaluation

This is an interesting general idea, but would be stronger with more detail on exactly what would be done and the impact. The proposal also would be stronger if more focused; perhaps with one specific area for the software. It is probably a good idea to provide more resources to permaculture practitioners or to people interested in learning more about permaculture. However, it seems unlikely to catalyze a step-change in permaculture adoption, because permaculture is inherently extremely local. For this contest, the proposal would also need more details on the potential greenhouse gas impact. At the moment it appears unknown and potentially low.

A good idea in general and the proposal will benefit from more specifics including more information on the proposed activities including: what will the platform do, how will it accommodate issues such as climate variability between locations, and how will users interface the platform? Also need more specific budget and timeline.

It would also be helpful to know how the user interface would allow not only open source programmers to expand the software, but to also allow the depth of permaculture knowledge to be broadened in an open source fashion. For example, many users will not know programming language, but could add permaculture technique knowledge or experiential knowledge into the software, if there was a database included in the software. It would be helpful for the software to be distributed to areas where internet access is poor or nonexistent.

Thanks for your comments. We have expanded the proposal information, here is a brief summary addressing your questions. These notes have been incorporated into the proposal.

What will the platform do.

The platform will provide novice and professional garden and productive landscape designers with access to information and tools specific to permaculture practices. This project proposes to improve upon current procedures used by practitioners - instead of utilizing a variety of different platforms to design a permaculture site, most of the work procedures will be available in this software. There will still be some add-ons, such as gathering site imagery from other sources and accessing a library of plants specific to locations not already included in the database.

It was addressed with greater detail in the following section: "What actions do you propose?"

How will it accommodate issues such as climate variability between locations.

The software will use the place coordinates to get specific information. More details are given in section "What actions do you propose?"

How will users interface the platform

It will be used from the web browser in any device. It could be used freely in the official web site or it could be installed locally.  More details are given in section "What actions do you propose?"

More specific budget and timeline

It was addressed with greater detail in the following section:

"What are the proposal’s projected costs?"

How users can improve the application without programming knowledge.

There will be a wiki like database with underlying semantic web technologies that will allow users to add data that can be used directly into the application. Quality control will be performed by expert users or the development team. More details are given in section "What actions do you propose?"

Access in areas with no internet access

It can be installed in a single computer or in a local network, like in schools and universities.  More details are given in section “What actions do you propose?”
