Hello MUAD,

I'm always a fan of proposals like yours - rehabilitating land, planting trees, sustainable agriculture and education. Are you familiar with permaculture practices, in particular polyculture, tree/plant guilds, and chop & drop green manure? I think there is more that can be incorporated into your proposal that will benefit the farmer's production. Though - you "agroforestry" may include these practices. Traditional row cropping is 'easier' to harvest, but interplanting crops (even in blocks) adds so much more to the product quality and plants' abilities to ward off insect attacks. A closed loop farming system can be produced by using permaculture practices. Can you define agroforestry in the proposal?

Hi Pia!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read through our proposal and for the incredibly useful links. The team was really touched that someone had taken an interest.

You raised a good point that we neglected to define what we meant by agroforestry in this proposal. If we get selected as semi-finalists and have a chance to edit I'll make sure we provide more clarification. Because the farms are quite different (some flat land, some sloping) we were hoping that we could provide a range of "options" for the farmers so they can decide which form works best for them. For some, we imagine it might just be trees on the borders of their farm or on the contours of their terraces, for others it may be a more deliberate attempt at alley or strip crops and for some (fingers crossed) it might even be "random" agroforestry using farmer managed natural regeneration and not seedlings at all.

I hope we do get to add more detail and would love to hear your thoughts again once we do.

Congrats on your past win also :)

Thanks for the warm thanks, Sarah & MUAD! Along the lines of natural regeneration - are you familiar with the man who reforested an island forest? I imagine you are, but, if not - Forest Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkZDSqyE1do

You might also glean some helpful information from the reforestation proposal (2013) https://www.climatecolab.org/contests/2012/agriculture-and-forestry/c/proposal/1304144

I think you are on target with the idea of a range of options - there will be differences requiring different actions, especially where micro-climates exist. I'm going to be creating a micro-climate here (subtropical & often like the climate of Santa Rosa, California [north of San Francisco]) for banana, guanabana, guava, fig and hopefully in the future, cacao and vanilla.

I look forward to seeing your entry make it into the semi-finals!

Have a great time :)
