The judges do not doubt the potential climate impact of transitioning from diesel to solar powered pumps. The idea has merit, though it seems to be mostly an economic challenge and does not necessarily innovate technologically or otherwise. The proposal could be strengthened by considering pairing it with solutions to irrigation over-withdrawal and saltwater intrusion. Irrigation practices as usual may become problematic with climate change and increasing salinity of both surface and underground sources.
