Proposal: Plant 10+ million idle acres in trees Contest: Land Use: Agriculture, Forestry, Waste Management Thank you for your contest entry. Thank you for your contest entry. We appreciate your willingness to share your ideas and also the time and effort you put into developing a proposal and submitting it to the contest. We have reviewed your proposal and found that it contained intriguing elements; however, have chosen not to advance it to the next round of competition. We encourage you to keep developing your idea. Transfer your proposal to a Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking “Move proposal.” We welcome you to stay involved in the Climate CoLab community: support and comment on proposals that have been named Finalists, and vote during the public voting period to help select the contest’s Popular Choice Winner. Climate CoLab will be opening more contests throughout the year and you are welcome to submit your proposal to those contests as well. Keep up the great work. The project design doesn't reflect what it takes to actual embark on an endeavor and would have been stronger if it has included information on the key stakeholders that need to be involved and how the author has included them in the idea development. There is also no information on how costs are derived as this would be quite costly both economically, but also politically because land alongside roads is frequently public and government managed land. By expanding the scope to "100+ million acres," credibility of the idea is further diminished.

The proposal is modest, but do-able, and beneficial. We look forward to see more specifics as we advance this proposal to the next round.
 Rod Walker Nov 6, 2017 10:32  | Proposal creator I have made the proposal more aggressive, targeting 100+ million acres worldwide and up to 10 million acres in the US. The original proposal was too conservative and understated the potential of this approach. October is my busy season, so I had virtually no time to work on improving this proposal, though I did manage to upgrade a few of the sections. I also cited one published work that quantifies carbon sequestration benefits from planting trees in the US. If invited to the final round, I should have more time available in the upcoming weeks to work on this. An award won through this process would be used to refine the proposed program and to seek backing for forming a non-profit to do what is needed to conduct a pilot in the US and perhaps one or two other countries. |
