Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

This is an interesting proposal with a strong link to direct GHG emissions reductions. However, it is unclear as to whether this is a potential project or if this is something that has already been running for several years and the proposal is for the continuation of the project. The proposal would be strengthened by addressing the following: (1) clarify whether this is a new project or if it is already off the ground and running; and (2) provide more information on the costs of the project.

In addition, the proposal authors could consider that in many developing countries most of the recyclable waste is already collected by informal and formal sectors. Most of the uncollected waste has very low recycling value, energy value and it is dirty mixed materials requiring a lot energy, water and efforts to recover. Therefore, the solution is at source segregation of dry and wet waste so that dry waste can easily be sorted to recover valuable materials and wet waste can be sent for biogas and manure without fear of heavy metal or chemical contamination. Since many decades, there have been considerable efforts to support informal sector for improving their livelihoods, reduce work related risks, and to increase recovery of recyclable waste, but so far there is no considerable achievement as the solution is at source segregation and then to connect to recycling system and also to improve waste collection system.
