Pitch

Foster economic empowerment and improve food security as well as access to reliable solar energy consumption and mitigate climate change

Description

Summary

Leo Leo Eco-Transport aims to foster economic empowerment and promote food security while ensuring sustainability in Arusha city. Leo Leo Eco-Transport is proposing a visionary and innovative synergistic solution to sustainable development of food security, reliable access to solar energy utilization, economic empowerment, employment opportunities and climate change that affects the surrounding environment.

The development of the first Eco-friendly food supply chain management organization that will use the first modified solar powered tricycle, with a solar paneled refrigerator, an emulator and a solar collector that will be used to convert solar energy into electricity. The solar powered tricycle will be used to distribute food from the farmers, to the food markets suppliers, then local food vendors and then final consumers; whereby it will help to increase market sales of food, increase crop yield, foster economic empowerment and discard food insecurity in Arusha city, Tanzania. This approach is doable and sustainable because it has already been done in Uganda and Nigeria, however the most innovative and unique feature of Leo Leo Eco-Transport is that the tricycle will be powered by a solar converted to electricity engine motor that will push the tricycle to move from one place to another which will be able to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SGGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, and 17 in Arusha city and Tanzania as a whole.

Proposals

Food supply chain management is a broad term that covers food and water security, agribusiness, crop yield management, green procurement, supply and demand chain, distribution and logistics of food from the food producers/farmers to the food markets/supplier, then to the local food vendors and fast foods and then to the final food consumers. The development or creation of a solar powered tricycle for the distribution of food with two wheel ride (2WR) powered with electricity converted from solar energy tricycle will be able to cover a distance of 57km/hr and the use of short message services (SMS) to deliver information about food to all food beneficiaries and stakeholders in Arusha city.

It is important to note that the increase of post harvest of food and crops is a contribution to environmental degradation and climate change in the atmosphere. In addition, time wastage and business stress for food producers, food markets/suppliers, local food vendors and final food consumers is another contribution to food insecurity and employment insecurities in Arusha city. Nonetheless, the decrease in crop yield and lack of proper sustainable distribution of food from the farmers to the market and to the final food consumers hinders the exploration and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, and 17 in Arusha city.

The proposed solar powered tricycle will mitigate the gap that exist within the food supply chain while ensuring green procurement is highly practiced and appreciated in order to mitigate climate change and environmental degradation. Thus, the mitigation of food supply chain gap will ensure the improvement of food nutritional values, food security, foster economic empowerment and employment opportunities in order to explore synergistic solutions to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 17 and 13.

What actions do you propose?

Due to the significance of good and healthy food consumption, there are important needs that have to be achieved in order to cover proper and sustainable strategies of food supply and food procurement for the win-win agreement between food beneficiaries in a sustainable manner.  It is very true that the lack of sustainable food supply chain management and food procurement management has led to food insecurity and the increase of climate change due to the increase of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere from the increase of post harvest of food, land encroachment and fuel pollution in Arusha city.

The modification of an electrical tricycle is not a new concept; however the proposed tricycle will be a two wheel ride (2WR) powered by solar energy that has been converted into electricity that will be able to cover a distance of 110km a day at a speed of 57km/hr. The solar powered tricycle will help food farmers to produce quality and accessible food for the food markets, local food vendors and final food consumers in order to avoid post harvest of food and the increase of climate change mitigation practices of using a solar powered tricycle.

The food supply chain management organization will create job opportunities for youths and foster economic empowerment to the local surrounding Arusha city community members through raising awareness about civic engagement and leadership training in Arusha city and the surrounding regions.

The use of short message services (SMS) to deliver information and communication to all food beneficiaries in Arusha city will prove civic engagement and social inclusion through the virtual interaction that will benefit all food beneficiaries instant and in a sustainable manner.

Leo Leo Eco-Transport will ensure to promote, support and advocate about the significance green procurement in both healthy matters and environmental concerns. Green procurement is a unique action proposed by Leo Leo Eco-Transport to ensure that food procurement is well utilized in order to maintain the flow of sales in the food industry while discarding food insecurity, economic empowerment and climate change especially the increase of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Nonetheless, Leo Leo Eco-Transport will be able to achieve food security and access to clean and reliable solar energy consumption as ways to foster economic empowerment, youth employment opportunities, decent jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Leo Leo Eco-Transport will not only focus on the food supply chain management services in Arusha city but also on the quality, quantity and nutritional provision of food.

In that respect, exploring and achieving sustainable development solutions to food security and solar energy challenges that affect Arusha city and Tanzania as whole through the implementation of an Eco-friendly food supply chain management and the proper utilization of solar energy consumption platform will incarnate to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, and 17.  The combination of food supply chain management and the proper utilization of solar energy is  potential in minimizing trade-offs in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, and 16 through the creation of mutual relationship or networks with food entities, beneficiaries, stakeholders and partners within the food supply chain system which mainly focus on improving sustainable functioning of the food supply chain, the quality and quantity of food, food competitiveness and pricing and nutritional values with significant acceptance or criteria for food security, economic empowerment and access to clean and reliable solar energy consumption.

Consequently, the proposed approach will align with United Nations Climate Change Actionin fostering prosperous climate change adaptation and mitigation through the use of the solar powered tricycle while achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 13 and 17 which as a result will build a prosperous sustainable future workforce and working environment in Arusha city.

Who will take these actions and which types of actors are involved?

Leo Leo Eco-Transport will establish sustainable collaboration and mutual relationships with stakeholders, partners, supporters, participants and analyst to make this approach be able to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, and 17. The following are key actors for the Leo Leo Eco-Transport starting with potential stakeholders including local food farmer or food producers, the local food vendors, food markets, final food consumers, solar energy users, employed and unemployed youths.

Food farmers or food producers play a crucial role in establishing sustainable food systems. Food farmers are often more productive and they will provide more employment and economic empowerment. Local food farmers will play a crucial role of avoiding pos-tharvest losses of food from the farms when processing, distributing and storing as well as appropriate marketing system of food to avoid food insecurity in Arusha city. In addition, local food vendors are very vital for the economic planning and development of Arusha city as well as create employment.

Furthermore, the food markets or food suppliers play a crucial role in emphasizing unlimited access and utilization of healthy food, with increasing food markets/food suppliers including supermarkets, groceries and street food vendors businesses in Arusha city to increase their access to all food beneficiaries in order to avoid food insecurity, unsustainability and economic empowerment. Food markets improve the production of quality and quantity food as well as storage of food that will benefit the final food consumers in Arusha city.

Local food vendors and fast foods in Arusha city represent a new way of society interaction and relationship building. Local food vendors and fast foods connects to cultural, territorial, ethnic, social inclusion and financial base that has positive impact on local economies and ecosystem especially in the food sector and food security in Arusha city. The role played by local food vendors and fast foods are alternative to the increasing globalization, whereby they are both taken as a form of socialization in the society, as a means of business or financial income and also as a form of communication within the society.

This approach will as well involve local, national and international organizations, groups and societies that have been formed by most small-scale food producers, food suppliers, local food vendors and the final food consumers in order to maintain and ensure that there is workforce and crop yield productivity to satisfy Arusha city community members with quality and quantity food consumption.

Where will these actions be taken and how could they scale?

The food supply chain management actions will focus on the sixteen (16) suburban and county areas of Arusha city where 780 and more farmers, local food vendors, food markets and final food consumers reside in those areas where interviewed about the challenging aspects of food insecurity. The above interviewed food beneficiaries appreciated and showed concern of the first sustainable food supply chain management using a modified solar powered engine motor and the use of short message services (SMS) to deliver and flow of information to all food beneficiaries in Arusha city.

Costs/Challenges:

What are the proposal’s projected costs?

In Tanzania, 75% of food harvested get lost while handling, storing and transporting it from one place to another, especially when delivering to food consumers, food markets and food suppliers. Post harvest loss has contributed food insecurity, climate change and environmental degradation while increasing poverty and poor health to the surrounding Arusha city community. To tackle this challenge of lack of sustainable food supply chain management and loss of post harvest of food in Arusha city, the Leo Leo Eco-Transport enterprise is proposing the first sustainable solar powered tricycle with a solar paneled refrigerator to distribute and store food after it has been harvested before the food is supplied to all food beneficiaries.

The challenge that the Leo Leo Eco-Transport in Arusha city, Tanzania will be affected when implementing is getting relevant licences for the solar powered tricycle from Tanzania Revenue Authority, EUWARA and other agencies that deals with environmental impact assessment. It is important to remember that building something novel in Tanzania must have some obstacles including licence's

The proposal’s projected costs will be as follows; at minimum $30,000 and $47,000 at maximum will be needed to make to be implemented and sustainable. The funding will be used to develop a responsive website, short message services (SMS) system, modify a solar powered engine motor tricycle and establish potential mutual relationship with farmers, food markets/suppliers, local food vendors and fast foods and final food consumers. The proposal’s projected funds will be used to mobilize and raise awareness to the surrounding local Arusha city community members about the principles of community engagement, food security, solar energy utilization, food supply chain management and post-harvest management of food to all food beneficiaries and stakeholders in order to be able to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 17.
