Pitch

biomass gasifiers for Biochar carbon soik sequestrationl, increasing soil fertility and productive yield, for space heating & cooling

Description

Summary

Biomass gasification Burns only the hydrocarbons in that biomass, leaving the elemental carbon as biochar.

There is no smoke or pollution produced, not burning the elemental carbon only reduces the total energy output of the biomass fuel by 1/3.

There are several companies presently making such gasifiers, a company in Illinois called chip energy and several in Europe and Australia.

The energy produced for space Heating can also be used in an absorptive cooler for air conditioning.

The resulting biocarbon, when put into topsoil becomes biochar, locking away CO2 for thousands and thousands of years.

While at the same time increasing yields, accelerating the humic process in soils that can grow soil carbon content exponentially.

Basically allowing a husbandy of whole new orders & kingdoms of animals, the microbes and fungi in the soil.

Is this proposal for a practice or a project?

Practice

What actions do you propose?

Incentives for farmers to build their soil carbon utilizing the bio char produced by different businesses using these gasifiers as their primary source of heating and cooling.

Such incentives can also take the form of carbon credits.

All political Persuasions agree that building soil carbon is good, not only for the soil but to lock away carbon dioxide for a very very long time.

Who will take these actions?

Any building that has a large enough Heating and Cooling load for the sizes available of the gasifiers that are for sale.

The smallest of which can produce 180,000 BTUs per hour while making 75 lbs of biochar and consuming 225 pounds of wood chips.

Such gasifiers produce no emissions, no smoke since they do not burn the elemental carbon, and release nitrogen as N2 , atmospheric nitrogen.

Where will these actions be taken?

Anywhere that biomass is now used as a fuel, any building that has a sufficient Heating and Cooling load.

The most successful uses of this technology are as clean cooking stoves in Africa and India. The programs that ngos have started allow subsistence farmers to become peasant farmers in a single growing season, however the biggest benefit of these top lit updraft clean biomass cook stoves is the fact they produce no smoke and therefore the women and children who die of black lung in emphysema are spared.

In the third world where biomass is a common fuel the women and children, died of black on and emphysema at a higher rate then is caused by AIDS and malaria combined.

In addition, specify the country or countries where these actions will be taken.

United States

Country 2

Canada

Country 3

China

Country 4

India

Country 5

Brazil

Impact/Benefits

What impact will these actions have on greenhouse gas emissions and/or adapting to climate change?

Given that there are about 200 billion tons of carbon in the atmosphere and once that carbon is sucked down bye biomass and gasified into biochar and put in the soil, another 200 billion tons will come out of the oceans.

This is barely enough to rebuild Are soil carbon to the levels it was before the Green Revolution and the agricultural revolutions

Carbon to the soil the only ubiquitous and beneficial place to put it.

What are other key benefits?

Food security, increased yields, increase soil carbon content, a rebuilding of the Arsenal of democracy, the Dark soils of the American Midwest which were spent freelee in providing the democracies of the world food during far too many wars.

These dark soils were 10% soil carbon when first put to the plow 150 years ago, now the best of them are only 4% carbon

This kind of regenerative, carbon farming is the best place to put our carbon, are fossil carbon which is just hanging out in our atmosphere causing Untold management problems.

Costs/Challenges

What are the proposal’s projected costs?

Market price of replacing the heating and cooling infrastructure of the businesses involved.

Timeline

The timeline is directly proportional to the incentives put in place to rebuild our soil carbon and produce, increase our food quality and nutrient density, heal our agriculture systems, and correct our climate dilemmas.

About the author(s)

The author has been blogging about biochar for about 10 years, reports to several online science forums and the list serves.

He has been the opening speaker at many biochar conferences in the United States.

Online he has had 1.5 million readers, they fill up his Paypal account to travel to these conferences.

He is a tireless advocate of building soil carbon as the only exponential solution to the global warming problem.
