Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

Dear authors,

Thank you very much for your proposal to our contest. Our judges have thoroughly reviewed a large number of interesting proposals over the past weeks. While your proposals has some very interesting ideas, the judges have decided not to advance it to the next round. We hope that our feedback below helps you to further develop your idea and would like to encourage you to keep up the good work.

Judges feedback:

The proposal aims to provide a suite of options to strengthen resilience of farmers – agriculture insurance, raising education and awareness, linkages with unique ID system, and technology. However, the proposed solutions are not properly fleshed out, especially the proposal on agriculture insurance. There is no detail provided on the proposed insurance scheme and no reference of lessons learned from agriculture insurance schemes in India.

While diagnosis of the problems and conceptualisation of a solution strategy is quite well-thought, for this to be a viable proposal there would need to be more concrete steps in terms of what specific government agencies (at least in the Punjab region) would be engaged in the policy-setting dimension. On the insurance side, the judges recommend to put some thought into what insurers specifically would need to be targeted and then consider what legislative regulation or economic incentive would oblige or encourage insurance companies to design and offer affordable premiums to the poorest and most vulnerable farmers.

Good luck and all the best,
The contest fellows
