Did you know that Bolivia losses 2.5 million USD yearly in agricultural insurance because of Climate change? We can fight it with technology

Description

Summary

Andean Farmers still rely on their ancient knowledge to get their crops. They used to be able to predict extreme weather conditions and get prepared in advance.

But now, Climate Change is introducing random extreme changes to weather causing farmers to lose their crops, poverty, a growing migration of young people from farms to the countryside and millions of USD in losses yearly in Bolivia.

Let's give them a hand with the help of technology. Latest advances in communication devices allow us build small cheap sensors to spread along a field and help them take care of their crops in a better way.

Surveys from the 'Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Agua' show that countryside people are more into technology, to the point that they ask for an application that could warn the when their crops need water or are getting really cold.

The Open Kamani project aims to provide a easy to use technological tool to farmers so that they can avoid losing their crops.

This also solves another big problem Bolivia is facing. The current insurance system in Bolivia just pays the farmers damaged by weather what they have lost, moving the damage from the farmer to the government, the problem is that they cannot control how well people take care of their crops and cannot prove when a loss was done willingly. In the end the government can only just pays the ones stating losing their crops, leading to corruption and huge losses to government.

Joining all data gathered with the net of sensors can provide information about how well a farmer takes care of their lands leading to a WEATHER/CROP CARE INSURANCE SYSTEM avoiding corruption and giving the government a huge tool to manage insurance money in a better way.

Here in the Open Kamani project we have the correct team of people and the correct MVP to help our farmers, we just need 40000 USD in seed Investment to launch it all and turn ourselves in a self sustainable company within the very first three years.

What actions do you propose?

Climate Change has destroyed the farmers power to forecast weather and extreme conditions such as draughts and frost.

Let's give them back the power of taking care of their crops. The Open Kamani project consist on building a net of sensors that help provide valuable information to the farmers.

Problems such as draughts, frost, floods caused by Climate Change can be forecast if a big enough amount of data is generated. This is how we generate data:

TECHNICAL PART

  • Build the devices required for 15 average size farms in the Andean Part of Bolivia.
  • Implement a net of sensors in 15 average size farms
  • The use of Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence allows us to expand the capacity of governments and help farmers.
  • Create a web and android application for government and the final user
  • Clean and analyze data gathered from the first farms for the first year.

HUMANITARIAN PART

  • Teach people from the country side accept and use the new systems to get valuable advice on their crops.
  • Partner to local communities leaders and volunteering organizations around Bolivia to reach people in the countryside.

GOVERNMENT

  • Migrate old system to a new Care Based Insurance system within the next three years.
  • Begin selling units and data to the government so the project is self sustainable.

FURTHER GROWING OF THE PROJECT

  • Provide new products to companies and the government such as smart farming for companies in Bolivia and forecast prediction based on the data collected by our net to the government.
  • Reach self sustainability for the other projects as well.

With this actions we help many Sustainable Development Goals such as:

  • No poverty (1)
  • Zero hunger (2)
  • Decent work and economic growth (8)
  • Sustainable cities and communities (11)
  • Climate Action (13)

Who will take these actions?

For this project to achieve success we need the three corners of society

Business

  1. The Open Kamani project will take care of the technical issues and data analysis.

Government

  1. Government will provide information about farms and other issues that might arise when dealing with the insurance system.
  2. The 'Insituto Nacional de Investigación Agropeuaria y Forestal' will help providing data regarding the different behaviours expected for different kind of crops.
  3. Other ministries like Water resources, Earth resources and the Insurance system.

Volunteering

  1. Volunteering Organizations such as JCI can help promote our activities and help with the sustainability of the project.
  2. Universities and organizations also handle valuable information that can help improve the project.
  3. Local leaders from the communities must help with the acceptance of the project in the very first farms

Where will these actions be taken?

This actions will take place in three locations:

Oruro: Comunidades de Sabaya y Jancohuyo Horenco

La Paz: Yungas

In each of the three communities 5 farms will be selected for the firs installs

We have already installed this system in Horenco with great conclusions for the range of the  wireless devices:

Installing system

Test for temperature and moisture were done as well, we need to calibrate the system to work in this particular land.

What are other key benefits?

Besides the direct benefits such as avoiding losses in farming we can list several other advantages of this system:

  • Avoid corruption in Bolivian farming insurance
  • Generate data related to weather in different points of Bolivia
  • Improve life quality of people living in the countryside
  • Avoid the migration of young people from the country side to the cities by providing them a more efficient way of working.
  • Help overall Bolivian production of food, Bolivia currently imports more than half the food is consumed from neighbour countries.

Bolivia currently spends millions of dollars in Farming Insurance, a single investment of 40000 USD can start the change to a better system.

What are the proposal’s costs?

We need 40000 USD in seed funding to execute the project for the first three years in three communities and in five average farms each, the costs, including local taxes are split as follows:

  • Materials: 10000 USD
  • Research and equipment: 5000 USD
  • Web and Cloud Development: 6000 USD
  • Installation: 4000 USD
  • Maintenance over 3 years: 7000 USD
  • Data Gathering: 4000 USD
  • Marketing: 4000 USD

This guarantees the normal development of the project for the first three years. After that The Open Kamani project is meant to be self-sustainable with main customer the government, government institutes such as INSA, INIAF and local communities organizations.

In the end this costs allows as:

  • Deploy our system at a medium scale
  • Finish our back-end platform
  • Provide more than 15 farms with a tool and training to IMPROVE their lives and production
  • Provide a new system of Farming insurance that will save millions to Bolivian government
  • Generate useful information that can be further analyzed and transformed into more benefits.
  • Provide a quality system to farmers and guarantee their normal work for more than three years
  • Propose a sustainable weather and crop care insurance system that defies corruption to Bolivia

Time line

First year:

  • Building the system: 2 months
  • Installing the system in communities: 1 to 3 months
  • Further Research 7 months
  • Aggressive marketing: 10 months

Second year

  • Maintenance and data cropping: 12 months
  • Moderate marketing: 12 months
  • Scale to other systems like DRON monitor with termal and IR cameras
  • Private companies target as new clients for new business model.
  • Individuals willing to take care of their plants as well can also be a potential new market

Third year

  • Maintenance and data cropping: 12 months
  • Moderate marketing: 12 months

For longer periods of time we want:

5 to 15 years

  • Achieve sustainability in LatAm
  • Our vision is to reduce the losses in a 40%, saving millions every year to Bolivian government only

Private customers can also be achieved as we received high interest from people taking care of small seedings, gardens and greenhouses.

Related proposals

The Open Kamani project improves and gives a step further in the direction of AgriGo:

A second step in the Open Kamani project would be to scale to a Blockchain system like inandproposals, but we are currently focusing on solving this problem for our country and Farmers with a simple direct solution to random changes caused by Climate Change. Smart contracts could be a powerful tool for our government in saving losses.
