Pitch

Training young people will bring innovative solutions for mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Description

Summary

Urban population in Africa currently about 450 million people( 40% of total population) is increasing and is estimated to become threefold by 2050 by which along with economic growth and urbanization, the waste management problems are becoming more serious in African countries due to limited collection services and inappropriate disposal( JICA cooperation, 2017). it is a huge challenge for African counties to sustainably bear the cost of urban and rural sanitation where illegal dumping and burning of wastes results in adverse effects on environmental and human health. it could empede economic activities and cause infectious and water-borne diseases.

The main purpose of this project is to raise culture of awareness among young people about the environmental challenges of Rwanda, increase the level of personal responsibility on the part of local businesses and young people through school clubs. 20 highschools in different parts of Rwanda will be  selected as representatives where environmental clubs for students  will be formed. schools will be chosen based on environmental conditions, e-waste and papers available and the level of awareness and sanitation at place. Different partners including Ministry of education, Ministry of youth, Ministry of forests and land and others will help to strengthen the environmental clubs created by talking the truth about issue of climate change through showing videos and documentaries to students, training students on recycling of wastes and using them to create projects which results in good environmental conditions, preparing seminars, teaching sessions, workshops and competitions on climate change topics with awards to students.

This project is expected to reduce impacts of climate change by 80% in this region in 2050 and understandings of people will be increased. In order to achieve SDGs, more projects are recommended in Africa to combat the climate change impacts which are affecting economic development of African countries.

What actions do you propose?

The following actions will be done in the project:

* To motivate students to take active role in recycling the waste papers produced at school and outside, in garbage cans or dust bins. this is due to the fact that more than 3 tons/ day of papers are produced in urban population in Rwanda and less amount are recycled.

* To provide training on climate change adaptation and mitigation to the students members of environmental club from both public and public schools. this will strengthen capacities of highschool students by improving cognitive skills to grasp information about climate change and be able to foster both mitigation and adaptation innovative solutions at a local level, within their schools, home and their neighborhoods.

* To engage school children to:

      1. learn recycling by starting on e-waste which include printer catridges, batteries, dead mobile phones, broken television, motors and other appliances which finds place in landfills, and toxic non-biodegradable ingredients inside them raise a major environmental issues. this will help students to be responsible citizens in future.

      2. serve as young environmental ambassadors of sustainability to create an atmosphere of recycling in their homes and schools.

       3. raise awareness through participation in recycling and environmental sustainability in Rwanda.

Who will take these actions?

The following are project partners and their role:

1. Ministry of education (MINEDUC): this will help in establishment of clubs in different public and private schools , adapt teaching ressources in selected highscools, providing scholarships related to sciences and climate change for students and teachers, grants information, setting up the rules and regulations that will govern the clubs.

2. Ministry of youth: this will help in providing certificate of completion of training on climate change adaptation and mitigation to the students members of clubs, preparation of national events linked to education and climate change resilience, establish a capacity building platform with academic stakeholders and climate change authorities, and cooperation agreement with highschools to develop training workshops.

3.REMA( Rwanda environmental management authority): this will help the students to understand environmental management strategies and how to practice them.

4. teachers: this will help in preparing the climate change essay contest for the students, development and review of training models, to train participants on how to identify the source of e-waste, recycle them or use them as another business opportunity. they will be organizing the workshop events which will include teaching sessions, seminars, trainings hands-on laboratory training, and tours to dumpsite, presentation of individual proposals or essays from participants and formation of actual clubs at schools.

5. students: they will play a big role in functioning of their clubs. students will apply the acquired knowledge and skills to produce projects for raising awareness and environmental sustainability either at schools and surroundings.

6. NGO:  the related NGOs also will help in providing any contribution towards building strong clubs at schools and to achieve environmental sustainability goals in Rwanda.

Where will these actions be taken?

The project will be implemented in Rwanda( developing African country), by which a sample of 20 highschools from different districts of Rwanda will be selected as representatives basing on their environmental conditions, the wastes produced at schools such as papers, e-wastes and the need for students to take actions on climate change impacts. later, there will be an opening ceremony for the students to talk much about how the clubs will be formed, how training will be conducted and its expectation, and the rules and regulations of the clubs in the selected schools. participating in environmental clubs and training by students from selected schools will help students to create projects associated to mitigation and adaptation to climate change in all parts of Rwanda leading to environmental sustainability in the whole country.

What are other key benefits?

The project will bring benefits to the following:

* students: school children will be able to learn new knowledge about recycling and share what they have learnt with their community members. they will be able to design and make sets of recycle bins, bring it back to their home and thus promote and facilitate household recycling practice with generation of money. again, academic performance on the climate change related subjects like geography will be improved.

* country( Rwanda): unemployment will be reduced since the project will create jobs, and train people to use available e-wastes as business opportunity. good environmental conditions will attract tourists hence income to the country. quality of education will be improved and promoted.

* environment related agencies( REMA): their environmental management goals will be achieved on time and their investments in environmental protection will be reduced since the clubs will be functioning at schools and outside.
