Clinical and biological waste management is a huge problem in Pakistan which need immediate attention and concrete steps to solve problem

Description

Summary

Pakistan is a country with around 200 million population with high incidence of nosocomial infections. In addition, there is also high antimicrobial resistance in Pakistan which is reported in several studies. Government of Pakistan prepared Hospital Waste Management Rules in 2005 but yet they are not implemented. Most of Clinical and Biological waste is Pakistan is disposed with general waste which make the problem very severe. Due to mismanagement of clinical and biological waste, the communities and environment is at great risk. National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS), Pakistan arranged over 30 training workshops in one year to educate, train and guide young scientists and clinicians about biosafety, biosecurity and clinical waste management. It has great effect on understanding the problem. NAYS will continue its efforts and will take practical steps to protect researchers, clinicians, general public and environment from the hazardous effects of clinical and biological waste. For this, we are proposing 20 workshops in hospitals and research institutes on clinical and biological waste managements

Category of the action

Reducing emissions from waste management

What actions do you propose?

There is need of more education, awareness and training in both hospitals and research centers so researchers and clinicians have better idea that how to deal with biological and clinical waste. For this, we suppose 20 more workshops in hospitals (10) and research centers (10). Along with workshops, the hospitals and research institutes will be provided with sharp containers, biohazard bags, signs, and personal protective equipment’s (PPEs) to set a trend of clinical and biological waste management in hospitals, lab and research centers.

Who will take these actions?

NAYS Biosafety working group is already making lot of efforts, only there is need to do it in more proper way with training about segregation, storage, transportation and disposal of clinical and biological waste. In addition, recommendations will be prepared for the government to apply the rules that they prepared back in 2005

Where will these actions be taken?

The actions will be taken at the point of generation of clinical and biological waste. The workshops will be conducted in 10 leading hospitals of Pakistan as well as 10 universities so they could be properly trained. This will be followed up by a meeting in which all the leading experts will be called to make proper policy to deal with clinical and biological waste.

What are other key benefits?

The benefits are huge as due to improper disposal of clinical and biological waste, the whole population of Pakistan in particular and world in general is at risk. There is already an increase in hospital born infection and more resistance of antibiotics in Pakistan. The situation could be worse in future so this is time for action. NAYS Biosafety working group is already making lot of efforts but there is need to broaden the scope of efforts which will be done after approval of this proposal.

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

So far less than 10% clinical and biological waste is properly managed in Pakistan, after a year long activity, it will result in over 30% management of hazardous waste which will be huge success.

What are the proposal’s costs?

In order to conduct 20 workshops, it will cost around 20,000 USD. Half of the amount will be through the success of this proposal and other half will be generated through sponsorship from government or pharmaceutical industry.

Time line

All the 20 workshops will be completed till the end of 2016.
