Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

Thank you very much for the time and effort you have put into your proposal. You have clearly came up with interesting ideas. This proposal has improved considerably and it is now much clearer what the Collective Power Platforms will do and how it will function.

However, there are still some details that prevent us from selecting your proposal for the finalist round.

You are still missing a clear discussion of you strategy for enrolling community members in the early phases of the program. You mention working with small cities, and communities. But you don't provide any details on what incentives, marketing strategies, or community campaigns you would need to win people's trust and bring them on-board with the project.

Also, throughout the proposal you contrast "national" with and local energy markets and producers and consumers. In many cases however it would be more accurate to talk about state or province level systems, rather than national ones.

It seems like your project is still in the theoretical phase, and the end product isn't that clear yet.

We invite you to continue to develop your idea and keep up the good work. Thank you again for your participation in the Smart Zero Carbon Cities challenge.

Best Regards,

Judges'' comments

Congratulations! Your proposal, ‘’The Collective Power Platform’’ in the Smart Zero Carbon City contest, has been selected to advance to the Semi-Finalists round.

As the Finalists selection is coming up, we thought to share with you some comments regarding your proposal, so you can have ideas and things to work on in order to come up to the next step with an even stronger submission.

Your proposal has a lot of potential. It is super interesting and has an excellent start. Some places in North American have a feed-in-tariff. How would your project relate to this?

There are also building energy retrofits supported by local governments in some places like Toronto (e.g. better buildings partnership). In your project, did you consider local governments as partners too?

Down the road you might look ahead to developers getting LEED (green building) points for steps towards what you are proposing.

Finally, for the next phase you might consider answering the question: who will be the champion of this kind of work? And make the answer more clear.

Thank you for your work on this very important issue. Congratulations to be part of the Semi-Finalist round, and keep up the good work for the next step! Don’t hesitate if you have any questions.

All the best,
2016 Climate CoLab Judges

For the semi-final round we updated the following parts:

• Summary has been updated
• The section: “What actions do you propose?” has been largely updated, only the subsection: “Smart infrastructure” has stayed unchanged. In the first paragraph, shortly after the figure of the grid a short discussion on feed-in tariffs is given.
• The section: “Who will take these actions?” has been completely rewritten. Here we describe who is the “champion” of our proposal and we describe future roles in a smart grid environment besides the Collective Power Platform.
• The section: “Key benefits” has been updated according to the feedback.
• The section: “Time line” has been shortened.

We are looking forward to receive the feedback of the jury.

Best regards,
Michiel and Niko
