Congratulations for the great work you did for the contest! Your proposal is clearly developed, it has a lot of potential and there was a strong progress since the first version of it. It feels like your project is very grounded and feasible. It will be interesting to see how the technological aspect of it will be developed since it seems pretty ambitious. We are looking forward to learn about how the next steps of your project will take place.

Best of luck!

Congratulations! Your proposal, ‘’My Energy Xpert: a home and small business energy management solution’’ in the Smart Zero Carbon City contest, has been selected to advance to the Semi-Finalists round.

As the Finalists selection is coming up, we thought to share with you some comments regarding your proposal, so you can have ideas and things to work on in order to come up to the next step with an even stronger submission.

There is a lot of potential in your proposal! We noticed that you’ve submitted your proposal to two contests, which you are allowed to. However, in order to fit the Smart Zero Carbon City challenge, we would suggest you to scale up your project, and think about the city-scale or the neighbourhood scale. For example, rather than focusing on single-unit application, you could focus on their connectivity.

We think that it would benefit from clearer connections with products that already exist. How does your product, for example, interface with a NEST or an EcoBee? For example, Toronto Hydro has a PeakSaverPlus device. Can your product add to these tools or is it in competition with them?

Also, here are some more questions that could be interesting to give details about in your proposal : Does your product work better in communities of particular densities? building stocks? Would it help connect people to bulk-buy services based on colocation (e.g. did you know that 4 people within 100m of your house are also curious about geothermal? Would you like to be connected to explore options?).

In the long term, would you connect it with various real estate data bases (e.g. realosophy.com) so that people could scan the energy audits of homes when buying? Do you imagine a direct link to government or commercial rebates?

The proposal is missing more details regarding the methodology and on how exactly the energy evaluation works. You mention several times that assessments will take 15 minutes and use existing data. But often energy data is not so easy to get a hold of. More details would be needed to understand where you would get the data from in order to be able to evaluate the feasibility of the project.

Thank you for your work on this very important issue. Congratulations to be part of the Semi-Finalist round, and keep up the good work for the next step! Don’t hesitate if you have any questions.

All the best,
2016 Climate CoLab Judges

Thank you for the encouraging comments!  With respect to the next steps of our project, we already have some projects underway and we thought we would share some testimonials from our partners.  We've also posted these in the comments section.

“The energy efficiency industry is replete with proprietary and custom tools that perform a myriad of analytical functions to calculate energy savings. However, until now, the industry has not offered a tool that has the flexibility and power of My EnergyXpert for use by consumers and businesses alike. As a cloud-based app, My EnergyXpert is truly unique and has the ability to transform vast portions of the market, as the specter of climate change forces more people to seek understanding and solutions to their own energy usage. With this one, easy-to-use tool, people can begin to make sense of the complex topic of energy usage and how best to conserve energy.”

“Having been in the technology and sustainability sector for over a decade, we’ve finally found an energy auditing program that gives our team and clients a fast, reliable and accurate assessment of their current energy consumption. The speed and ease of use was paramount for us. energyX has given us the tool we needed to increase our business and move into areas where we always wanted to go and grow….it’s simply brilliant. I would recommend My EnergyXpert to any company, utility or educational institution that wants the best platform out there bar none!”
