Pitch

Creating a platform which is drives by youth to engage people to be climate agents for doing climate actions.

Description

Summary

This proposal aim to approach people and make them to be the climate agents for doing climate actions. We encourage people to think about their lifestyle decisions and make them understand how their daily actions might contribute to climate change. For example, the uses of a small car will emit 221 gCO2 each km (DEFRA, EIA, EPA, and GREET 1.8); On the other hand, based on (Juerg, 2009) the carbon footprint of plastic (LDPE or PET, poyethylene) is about 6 kg CO2 per kg of plastic; etc.

We will  give them information about their personal carbon footprint facts and make them find lots of ways to tackling climate change. Because based on (Akimoto et al, 2009) we need to consider climate change globally but act locally.

While the rate of human extraction on the environment is higher than the assimilation of the earth's carrying capacity.,  the need for a change in lifestyle for the sake of sustainability expected. (Dapas, 2015). So that, we promote shifting behaviour such as using tumblers, reusable bags, bicycle and public transportation, and other activities. We want them realize that our carbon footprints are our responsibility. Then, we make them to be climate agents to spread this climate reality through peer-to-peer communications on their own communities. We tend to build around a dynamic connections by using peer-to-peer communication. So we might working together for climate solutions, and everyone can be participating no matter who they are. Are they a student, teacher, citizen, or anything else.

The actions will be promoted through several climate projects which will be held in  several momentum in order to adress climate changes. The projects will be pay attention on the people consumption and waste habits, The projects will show how can we adopt more sustainable behaviors in a simple way as a individual.

What actions do you propose?

These are several actions we want to propose. By using “Peers to Peers” approach, we tend to engage youth for being Climate Agents to raise people's awareness.  These climate agents would be engaged directly, in which, they would be mentored by the current Climate Agents.  After that they will have their own voice to spreading the climate reality to their own communities, and eager to approach their own groups for promoting doing climate actions such as shifting behaviours.

We will have monthly event, according to list of Environmental Days. These are 2 example pilot projects that’s been done by YFCA, Volunteers, and Collaborator team.

  1. Celebrating World Planting Day on 21st March 2016 by doing Children Farming and Crayon Campaign to promote green-behaviors for Children. Directly, we engaged the parents and teachers to be the Climate Agents. The next thing we had done Crayon Campaign. We want to educate children about Climate Change by the fun-way such as colouring the earth sketch. At least, there were around 12 Volunteers, 10 Teachers, 30 pre-school students, and 30 mothers that’s engaged by this project.

  1. 24th April 2016, there was Earth Day celebration. We engaged more than 80 youth, to promote Green-Lifestyle such as Tumblers and Re-usable day, No-Plastic Bags Campaign, No-littering waste Campaign, Photo challenge with theme #IRenewMySelf, and Hand-signature Campaign to engage the societies directly. We were eager the youth for doing Parade and environmental oration to promote #IRenewMySelf and Green-lifestyle especially. At least, we engage 9 volunteers, 80 Earth Science students, 60 local citizens.

For May 2016, there would be Bike-to-Campus projects, adapted by Bike-to-Work Campaign on Third Week Friday of May! The concept itself is really simple, promoting Bicycles as our daily transportation. There would be others pilot projects such as No-wasting food campaign goes to campus, Climate Class for Junior and High School students, Tumbler day campaign goes to campus, and etc.

Who will take these actions?

The climate projects will be held by climate agents across the region in collaboration with some related communities and volunteers which we will recruit. And then the climate agents resulted from the projects will influence their personal communities in a peer-to-peer approach.

Where will these actions be taken?

How will these actions have a high impact in addressing climate change?

Bandung is a region in Indonesia which have highest average emissions of Greenhouse Gases with a value of approximately 12.000 gr CO²e/ capita/day (IESR, 2011). The pattern of life that differs in one region will determine the amount of emissions from others. Hopefully in approximately 10 months to reach 100 youth by 10 projects who will be able to shift their community’s behavior. Therefore, a direct reduction of 630 tCO²e in the emission of greenhouse gases is expected in first year of the pilot projects. If these climate agents act as peer-to peer approach to their personal communities, these emissions could be reduced even bigger.
