Pitch

Increase the number of years of harvest in a slash and burned parcel by promoting rotation and native trees planting as fallow's enrichment

Description

Summary

Search of soil fertility is the key major to unplanned deforestation by slash and burning practices inside great forests mosaics in developing countries.

With usually using of bad seeds and pushed by factors as demography explosion in rural areas and the need of production growth, people doesnt have choices others than to increase their pressure on forests for agricultural and by using slash and burn.

The soil submited to those practices lose quickly nutrients and are abandoned to others fresh forest parcels. That cause increasing rate in lose of primary forests of the region or of the country.

The contribution of this fact in the global emission level is not negligeable, it relate to a huge amount in the contribution of the forests to the global climate change.

We think and are convinced that lengthen the duration of using of the forest parcel opened by using the slash and burn practices, will reduce the pressure on primary forests and as consequence the reduction of emissions due to deforestation.

This can be afforded, by implementation of a wide range of actions of outreach and support to farmers providing new techniques and new sights of land planning and future projection of land using.

What we propose is to reorganize the traditional land-spent into a well managed practices where people are guaranteed to harvest enough for a long period (3 years) and to have insurance that the soil they left behind will still produce environmental, economics and social benefits.

The rate of deforestation will be measured before actions take place as référence and the monitoring and evaluation process will follow to demonstrate  the gain in carbon storage due to the impact of activities as the increase of socio economical conditions.

What actions do you propose?

These actions will be implemented :

Supplying in New seeds for farmers (in eg NeRica rice variety)

Implementation of a rotation in the field culture  between a Legumin and a graminae.

Parcels switch between the items above. (Eg soyabeans and rice, or maize + manihot and groundnuts, etc. )

Local trees nursery for trees with high social values (Eg. Caterpillar trees, medecine use tree, etc.)

Outreach and sensitization.

Who will take these actions?

The actions will be taken especially by :

Farmers

The local community

Territorial administration

NGOS

International funding

Where will these actions be taken?

The actions will be taken :

Inside forests communities

Where slash and burn is the practice for subsistence agriculture.

Where the forest lost is highly defined related to agriculture.

Where needs for increasing farmers economy is related to agriculture.

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

Actually the amount of primary forest sequestration is 240 ton/hectare. The lose of that amount in will be encompassed with a plantation of native forest trees with a high concentration of trees with social and economical species (eg caterpillars ones) and the reach of up to 300 ton/ha can be reached after 15 years of land use for agriculture and reconversion to an enriched fallow.

To a large area, this represent an significant amount of carbon sequestration after release by agriculture and reconstitution by trees planting.

What are other key benefits?

The others key benefits are :

Harvest of caterpillars, that have high economical value, and protein providers at low cost.

Fuel woods for a long period from farming, s

Housing construction woods,

Medecine topics from trees planted,

Others social use (local art, etc)

What are the proposal’s costs?

The proposal cost average approximation of USD50000 /village/Year

Time line

The actions proposed are intended to be implemented permenently in landscapes for the space belonging to each community is limited and well defined.

Organizing the a good program will not only allow increase the food production but also allow a peace building bettwen communities that share boundaries.

In many cases we had seen that several communities enter into an opened conflict because ongoing farms get out of borders. Stabilize people in a well defined area can alleviate conflicts.
