This is a very good proposal. You may wish to consider a smaller division for a pilot study rather that the whole country of Ethiopia. Also, you may wish to study this FAO tool (if not done yet) in calculating how much carbon your project can sequester   .. http://www.fao.org/tc/exact/ex-act-home/en/

Dear Olanlyan,

Thank you very much for your encouragement and giving me information on FAO tool of calculating the amount of carbon sequestered under my project. Cornering the size, I have proposed the project to be conducted on 10 selected sites representing diverse agro-ecologies. Then based on experiences and lessons learned, further expansion of the project to more and more areas will be done.

With Best Regards

Wassie Haile

Hi,

Do you know approximately how much land is available for recovery (has been degraded so far)?

Best regards

Helio

Thank you very much for you question. According to Yesuf et al. (2005) about 2 million heaters of farm lands in the highland areas are completely degraded and they are at the point of no return. Please kindly find the details on the following link: www.efdinitiative.org/sites/.../costs_of_land_degradation_in_ethiopia_v2_final.pdf

However, I have no information on the size of other degraded lands (degraded forest lands, degraded wet lands etc.) currently. But, I will explore literature and other relevant sources and inform you in the future, please.

Hi Hellloauberhelmer

This is a follow up response to your question. So please kindly see below"

Land degradation caused by soil erosion, deforestion, salinization etc.  is the worst in Ethiopia than any other country in the world with the exception of Haiti.  It is estimated that about 41 % of the total land area of the country is severely degraded.  This shows how serious the soil degradation problem is in Ethiopia.  Please kindly visit: www.africacarbonforum.com/.../RT5_DanielFikreyesus_Echnoserve.pdf
