If anyone tries to lower the temperature further than stipulated lower limit following options could be of help, either singly or better in combination or tandem.

  1- Voice message "we humbly request you to set the temperature to the stipulated lower limit & help all of us save the earth's environment;

  2- Voice message integrated with visual images/video showing 'Children from all the continents & races requesting to reset the level to prescribed lower limit in the best interest of earth's environment";

  3- Built in mechanism to restore after some stipulated predetermined period to the stipulated lower limit.

  4- Sending a message to manufacturing company following repeated breach.

Hi Waghhm,

thanks for your comment!!!! Thanks for your ideas, and our apologies that we did not answer before. We are new to the Climate Colab and we must learn how to better organize ourselves.

At first glance I must say that your suggestions are very appropriate!!

I will check with the team and get back to you!!!

Thanks,

Regards,

Eduardo

Thanks for your reply to my comment.

5- The manufacturing company requesting the user via email/message to 'kindly help save environment by respecting the 25 C limit'.

Similar arrangements are possible with heating systems in colder regions as well.

Waghhm,

that is right. Yesterday we were talking with other team members and we think that AC remote controllers might be improved removing the complexity that they now have.

For example, ACs can work in the following modes:

  1. "dry mode", which I must confess I never used in my life till yesterday,
  2. "cool mode", the typical working mode,
  3. "heat mode",
  4. "fast cool" mode,
  5. "sleep mode" and
  6. "automatic mode".

This kind of complexity is beyond the understanding of most residential AC users, at least in my city.

Users don't understand / differentiate small temperature variations. What is the difference in perception between 24 and 25 degrees? I think most people cannot differentiate that either.

What people understand is whether they feel comfortable and not. So we have the idea in mind to propose to use a more simpler AC remote control with a humidity sensor, either with only one or 4 buttons.

AC remote control with only one button:

  • On / Off. The remote control has a logic circuit that decides the best mode of functioning given the humidity and temperature of the room.

AC remote control with 4 buttons

  • For people who tend to feel cold
  • For people who tend to feel hot
  • For people who typically are between the other two groups.
  • Off button.

As before, the remote control has a logic circuit that decides the best mode of functioning given the humidity and temperature of the room.

In order to replace the older AC remote controls, these new remote controls should be very cheap and generic, and also incorporate your 5 suggestions

  • Voice message "we humbly request you to set the temperature to the stipulated lower limit & help all of us save the earth's environment;
  • Voice message integrated with visual images/video showing 'Children from all the continents & races requesting to reset the level to prescribed lower limit in the best interest of earth's environment";
  • Built in mechanism to restore after some stipulated predetermined period to the stipulated lower limit.
  • Sending a message to manufacturing company following repeated breach.
  • The manufacturing company requesting the user via email/message to 'kindly help save environment by respecting the 25 C limit'.

And other messages that could be incorporated.

Great proposal. Win Win to everyone. And most importantly, if a global convention would be archived, it would open the door to other conventions that make a lot of sense. Ultimately I am hoping for a convention that gradually outlaws the burning of fossils for energy staring with coal and then phasing out gas and oil burning as our energy needs are met through renewable means.

We have answered the comments and some objections made by judges, and also learnt a lot.

We propose to use Intermediate Intelligent Controllers for existing ACs, so that they intelligently run the AC using temperature and also relative humidity data.

The Intermediate intelligent Controller will also communicate with a cloud based application running on a cell phone, tablet of PC, which will also register usage data and recommend users about AC maintenance, money saved and GHG emissions saved.

This data might also be used by government and electric utilities to better handle energy demand, to award benefits to best performing users and other benefits.

You also need to include in the proposal the obligation by hotels, especially expensive hotels, to have windows that can be open rather than using AC all day due to the lack of ventilation.

Buena Suerte!!!

Martin,

thanks for your suggestion!! We basically target residential ACs in our proposal, those that people typically use at home. I think that we should try to present your idea as part of a proposal for the next competition!!! Obviously the hotel industry  should also help reducing its carbon footprint. We offer to help you and / or be part of our team, as you prefer!!!!

Cheers,

Eduardo

Hello Commentors,

I have voted for this proposal. Congratulations to Aylin, Eduardo, Martina, Lucia, Ferrando and Alan on their selection as finalists! The aim to reduce air conditioning power consumption has similarities to the thermal efficiency enhancing unit (TEEU) mark V. TEEU mark I (as described in my proposal) extracts heat from a hot environment and pumps it to a secondary heat source or sink of even higher temperature. TEEU mark V does something similar, with the distinction that the hot environment is closer to room temperature than a thermal power plant heat exchanger.

https://www.climatecolab.org/contests/2016/energy-supply/c/proposal/1316801

Energy from the pumped heat subsidises or contributes towards the work needed to drive the heat pump. This reduces the required input “cooling” energy that must be purchased and the subsequent greenhouse gas emission from a fossil-fuel thermal power plant.

Please review my proposal and vote if you think it can help. The "energy supply" vote will not remove the "industry" vote.

Best regards,

Dimoir
