Pitch

We can manufacture all the jet fuel we need and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Description

Summary

Use energy kites fromwww.kitegen.comandwww.makani.comfar out at sea, to provide unlimited electricity to mass-produce synthetic jet fuel and gasoline from carbon dioxide from our coal burning electric power plants and sea water, which would be a major carbon neutural fuel source in our immediate future.

What actions do you propose?

The U.S. Navy Laboratory invented a system that manufactures jet fuel or gasoline out of recycled carbon dioxide, sea water, and electricity, which they use on the Navy's aircraft carrier ships. We now have the established technology to upscale that operation. Although we cannot have energy kites near cities, due to the danger to aircraft and NIMBY (Not In MY Backyard!) protesters, we could set them up in the middle of the oceans to provide the unlimited electricity needed to mass produce synthetic jet fuel and gasoline, using sea water and carbon dioxide recycled from our coal burning electric power plants. This would be a carbon neutral fuel source and burn with no NOX air pollution as well. We have the established technology for all this, it's just a matter of implementing it on a massive scale, to make the whole project cost effective in the long run. The U.S. Navy has a few fuel carrier ships it made by an accounting error that are in disuse, and they could be modifed to mass manufacture this artificial jet fuel or gasoline and shipped to the middle of the oceans, to start a very big production  and transport business. There are already companies that make synthetic fuel from the CO2 in the air, but transporting it in condensed fluid form from our coal burning electric power plants would make all this a far more robust operation.

Who will take these actions?

The EPA, the International Energy Agency, and all of the renewable fuel companies could get on board with this massive project. If we can provide unlimited electricity from energy kites, use unlimited sea water, and get unlimited carbon dioxide to in effect, make an unlimited source of clean burning jet fuel and gasoline, that would also lessen our collective carbon footprint, well, it's just an idea that is due now. Again, we have the established technology for such a project as this now, so pretty much everyone would get on board with it. Our oil wells will run dry eventually, and this might be a valid option to replace the fuel derived from that source in our immediate fture anyway, so we might as well all implement now rather than later, when the economic investment options may be less robust than it is today.

Where will these actions be taken?

This project would be mobile thorugh out the world's oceans, in order to deliver the synthetic jet fuel or synthetic gasoline to many nations all over the world. I recommend thewww.kitegen.comor ww.makanic.com energy kites as the source of electricity from this project, because they are the most portable option. That is, this big system of ships would move around a lot, and although solar cell panels and Pelamis, which are wave powered electricity generator devices could be used to provide a lot of the electricity needed for this manufacturing process, it would take a lot longer to move them about the globe, so that this project could supply the fuels where they are needed here and there.

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

That would vary with the amount of carbon dioxide recycled from the coal burning electric power plants. I am not technically qualified to give you an accurate estimate because it all depends on the initial scale of this operation. The idea is to start small, and roll over the profits from sales of the synthetic jet fuel and gasoline to greatly expand this operation and keep it growing. An EPA expert on coal plant emissions would be best qualified to answer this question.

What are other key benefits?

There are NO nitrates or tar or other pollution in synthetic jet fuel or synthetic gasoline, so widespread application of these fuels would lead to far less air pollution or smog in the long run.

What are the proposal’s costs?

Sorry, I am not qualified to say. I am not a college professor in this field.  The EPA or International energy agency could give you a valid estimate however.

Time line

It could happen in one year, if the feds, the U.S. Navy, and related fuel and energy institutes got together on it. Again, we GOT the established technology for this now!
