Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

Overall, this is a good proposal with a modest budget and good implementation plan. The food-energy-water nexus project is a good thing. A specific location for a pilot project would be useful, with the ability for results to be replicated elsewhere. The source separation of urine is gaining traction. Furthermore, the direct tie to a community greenhouse is good. The impact in the communities could be very positive, but the global impact might be smaller due to potential lack of applicability of Himalayan rural implementation to urban areas.

The proposal fails to indicate the causes of existing water scarcity in a Himalayan region, is it sudden and how does it relate to climate change? Is drip irrigation being used currently? How will this investment of 10k for 10 households be replicated by others? Why is this pilot needed when, according to the proposal, 2000 households are already using this technology in 20 other clusters?

Food energy water nexus project is a good thing. Specific location for pilot project with ability for results to be replicated elsewhere. Looks to be affordable and manageable. Source separation of urine is gaining traction. The direct tie to a community greenhouse is good. The impact in the communities could be very positive, but the global impact might be smaller due to potential lack of applicability of Himalayan rural implementation to urban areas.

I'm always a bit skeptical on toilet projects. Will the toilets be used? Will they last long enough to make a difference? (I have seen hundreds of latrine projects, mostly for hygene projects rather than adaptation, that were essentially a waste of time for various reasons specific to the culture/region) This said, given the proposal is a small scale pilot - it might at least help understand feasibility. COuld be win win in terms of adaptation/water resilience and improved access to hygenic toilets.

Thank you for approving the proposal for going further. Cementers have rightly pointed out positive parts of the proposal and its applicability. Regarding toilet projects. Toilet is most essential for the community. But this is not a toilet projects. District being already ODF people may have some kind of toilet already build and used as a part of sanitation need. This will modify the toilet to divert urine and use as ecosan toilet. Main project here is to solve problem of water scarcity. Urine will be used both as water and nutrients. We have changed proposal to make it more clear also to incorporate comments of other visitors.
