SUBJECT: Climate CoLab Judging Results
Proposal: Cash for Trash: E-Waste Disposal and Management in China
Thank you for participating in the 2015 Climate CoLab Waste Management contest, and for the time you spent in creating and revising your entry.
The Judges have strongly considered your proposal in this second round of evaluation, and have chosen to not advance it as a Finalist for this contest.
We, the Judges and contest Fellows, are truly grateful for your contribution to the Climate CoLab and for your commitment to address climate change.
We encourage you to keep developing your work. Transfer it to the Proposal Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking “Move proposal”.

Additional comments from the Judges:
Judges 1: Unfortunately, the judges' questions from the semifinalist review round were never addressed.
Judge 2: I can see the potential of using this approach to recycle large consumer electronics, the kinds that are difficult for individuals to move (large TVs, refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc). It would seem that the cost of picking up smaller consumer electronics in terms of GHG emissions from pickup vehicles would outstrip the benefit. Most consumers electronics like cell phones contain little recoverable resources (batteries being an exception) so I would question the value in this. Centralized facilities for consumer electronics recycling, especially smaller ones, seems more efficient. For larger consumer electronics, pickup by the manufacturer during delivery of replacement item is more cost effective and fuel efficient.

Congratulations! Your proposal, Cash for Trash: E-Waste Disposal and Management in China in the Waste Management contest has been selected to advance to the Semi-Finalists round. You will be able to revise your proposal and add new collaborators if you wish, from July 1st, 2015 until July 14, 2015, midnight Eastern Time.
At the revision deadline listed above, your proposal will be locked and considered in final form. The Judges will undergo another round of evaluation to ensure that Semi-Finalist proposals have addressed the feedback given, and select which proposals will continue to the Finalists round. Finalists are eligible for the contest’s Judges Choice award, as well as for public voting to select the contest’s Popular Choice award.

Judge 1: Another excellent proposal. One main questions: by allowing service providers to bid for item pick up, does that create a race to the bottom in terms of operations (in order to keep costs below revenues) that may result in unsafe / environmentally hazardous practice as opposed to thorough holistic and safe dismantling / disposal of systems?
As in, what would stop a service provider from collecting an item extracting the most valuable materials and discarding others to maximize profit? Will / does the app vet all service providers for environmental responsibility? If so, will this exclude some of the more informal sectors from participating in the app?
Judge 2: Existing technology, with project already in place.
