Thank you for participating in the Designing High Density Urban Bike Parking competition and for the time and effort you spent creating your submission.

The judges have considered the Lift and Lock Bike Rack and have chosen not to advance it to the Finalists round of this competition. Although the judges found your proposal to be interesting and imaginative, your submission does not appear to meet the City of Cambridge’s Technical Criteria for Bike Parking Design in regards to accessibility because it requires lifting to place the bicycle in the rack.

We appreciate your creative contribution to the competition and thank you for being a part of this effort to design innovative, high-density bike parking.

Congratulations! Your submission, Lift and Lock, has been selected to advance to the Semi-Finalists round of the competition! The presentation of your submission is visually compelling and the judges appreciate your design’s creativity.

You now have until March 7th to make revisions and improvements to your proposal. We hope to see you use this time before the final round of judging to respond to design issues that were raised by the contest judges, including:
• How your design increases bicycle parking density. As presented, it is not clear that any less space is needed than the current traditional bicycle parking requirements.
• How the parking system might accommodate different bicycle sizes and types, such as those with fenders. There is a particular concern with the proposed bar, which seems restrictive in terms of which bikes it could fit.
• How your solution could be modified to include a ramp to enable people to roll a bike into the rack, as your current design does not meet the City of Cambridge Technical Criteria for Bike Parking Design (“bicycle racks must not… require that the bicycle be lifted to get it into position”).
• Address the durability of a hinge mechanism, as moving parts are generally highly susceptible to wear and tear as well as failure with heavy use in a public environment.
