Judge 1:

Proposers always seem to identify alumni as bottomless pits of capital. If only it were so. These authors were clever in turning their funding scheme into a contest between self-identified groups. Who doesn't like a good WIN. I also like the tracking app idea. Perhaps with an MIT map on which the buildings go from red gradually to green as the projects progress.

My only negative comment is that all MIT alumni do not have Twitter handles.

Judge 2:

This proposal is creative and may have future potential, but there are 2 major disconnects between this proposal and the work that needs to be done on the MIT campus.

The first is with respect to scale of expenditures and the duration of the work effort. The approach suggested by the author(s) makes use of apps and social media. This kind of approach is most effective for short duration programs (perhaps a few months) that might achieve 7 or 8 figure totals if they are extremely successful. An extremely successful example is the Pan Mass Challenge, which is repeated each year with tremendous marketing support. One reason why they are so successful is that they subdivide their overall challenge into a number of very personal, individual challenges. Most one-time efforts of this type raise amounts in the 5 to 6 figure range. The cost of this effort at MIT is measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It will take years to complete this effort simply because the campus can sustain only so much construction activity at any time.

The second disconnect is that work required on campus has to do more than just meet climate goals. Additional renewal and renovation are required as well, and it is not clear how easily the climate change component an be broken out.

Another key question is where will the software needed for incentives and recognition come from?

Judge 1:

A virtual MIT campus to provide the opportunity for alumni for to contribute to projects at MIT both in terms of expertise and funding is very helpful. The climate action plan needs ideas for implementation and this is a novel and potentially powerful idea.

Judge 2:

This is a really neat idea, and potentially very powerful, particularly with our aging building infrastructure. I’d like to see the proposal built out a little further. I don’t really understand how the online game would work, but Adopt-a-Roof in particular seems like a terrific idea! It would be a way for environmentally-minded mid-range donors to feel like they’re making a great contribution. Would the donors be recognized in some way?
