Proposal: Platform for Community Engagement around Achieving Carbon Neutrality Contest: Fostering Climate Collaboration in Boulder, CO 2016 Thank you for your contest entry. Thank you for your contest entry. We appreciate your willingness to share your ideas and also the time and effort you put into developing a proposal and submitting it to the contest. We have reviewed your proposal and found that it contained intriguing elements; however, have chosen not to advance it to the next round of competition. We encourage you to keep developing your idea. Transfer your proposal to a Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. This project isn't clear enough on how to actively engage the public, also because the author themselves said that there wasn't clear commitment from the test run @ green naropa it makes me hesitant to put it through to the next stage.

This proposal presents a nice balance between individual and collective action. It provides people with concrete steps. Having a cafe menu of options would be interesting. Will people have budgets that they can track their actual emissions? Having a website that appeals to people and can be used from their phone or computer sounds nice and expensive. Have you found other tools already in use? I recommend more build out on how the applications.

Thank you for your effort to work toward this important goal! I hope these thoughts can be helpful as you develop the proposal.
For one thing, I would like to see a tighter integration between the personal and the collective. The stronger part of the project is around personal practices; the collective activities, and the support of city council initiatives, could stand to be clearer. Also, drawing connections between the two -- after all, the carbon footprint of individual behaviors depends a great deal on collective decisions. What sources of electricity are available to the community? How safe is it to ride a bike rather than drive? Is public transportation adequate? It seems to me that these sorts of questions present concrete opportunities for the individual and collective activities to reinforce one another.
To that point, also, I'm concerned that you're relying a bit too much on the "magical thinking" that often accompanies the development of online platforms -- that the platform will do all the work for us. What you're describing sounds to me like a major community organizing and public awareness campaign, which seems to me like a job that will require more than one staff member and a bare-bones website. Your goal is very ambitious, and I would encourage you to consider either reducing the ambition of the goal or (even better) becoming more ambitious with the means you'd like to have at your disposal to make this happen. It feels to me that, currently, there are a some major, missing steps between the development of this platform and carbon neutrality for Boulder. I'd encourage you to flesh those steps out more.
