Pitch

A cultural intervention and community competition that brings fun and creativity to the serious work of wholesale systems transformation.

Description

Summary

Vermontivate! is a nationally recognized, award-winning community sustainability game. It was created to address the urgent need for positive, proactive, transformational responses to the pressing challenges of climate change with a sense of joy, playfulness, and collaborative competition.

Players go to the website, where they create a profile, complete with secret code name, and register with their town, school, or business team.

Over the course of 6 weeks, players on a wide range of climate and sustainable-living challenges. Every week has a theme such as team-building, food, energy, transportation, green economy, and future action.

The challenges come in 5 separate streams: individual action, community engagement, artistic response, gratitude and celebration, and team-building.

Some of the challenges are inquisitive (i.e. what do you know about the difference between fossil fuels and renewable energy?), some are reflective (i.e. what forms of non-fiscal capital do you have in your life?), some are specific and prescriptive (i.e. go change that lightbulb) and some are more open-ended (i.e. interview someone involved in local food systems and ask them about their experiences).

Players take action and write about their experiences on their profile, earning points, which are accumulated by their team. At the end of the game, the winning teams get prizes like an ice cream party from Ben&Jerry's or a six-foot teddy bear from VT Teddy Bear.

The winning teams also get the help of the staff of Creative Roustabouts and volunteers from the Vermontivate! community to achieve a large sustainability-related goal that they've developed throughout the course of the game.

Teams can be of any size and level of activity, but in order to be eligible for the grand prize competition, they have to have a minimum of 3 players, designate a public clubhouse where people can gather, set some climate/sustainability-related goals, and have a public launch party.
