Discussion Energy Supply 2014

I'm new here, so maybe don't understand, maybe naive. Don't we have solutions? What about solar panels and solar heating at the consumer premise? Sure, it's not a 100% solution (for people/organizations without much sun), but it sure would decrease GHG emissions. And for those ready to argue about lack of sun at night, combine with batteries for power storage.
Maybe the contest isn't about looking for technological solutions, but rather looking for political and/or economic solutions?

Hi 'billw', welcome and thank you for your comment. I believe that we currently have the technologies at our disposal to 'solve' climate change, such as harnessing the sun for both electricity and heat production. That said, some additional technological solutions might well be proposed as a part of this contest and we are certainly open to that. But as you noted, the political and economic dimensions of the climate change problem are arguably the most tricky and need the most attention; and we are hopeful of innovative solutions on this front. Thanks again.

What about a new way to grow piezo electric crystals that would continually produce free energy without having to put stress on the crystal or bend it to produce a dipole moment?

@billw: The question you raised about the scope of this contest is very important. While the contest specifically invites solutions to GHG emission reduction from electricity generation, such a solution is not expected only from a technological perspective. There can be a combination of various measures that include socio-economic, political and technological tools. Having said that, an entirely new technological intervention or a mere social initiative could alone give impetus the ongoing efforts of climate mitigation globally. So, this contest is about 'not leaving any stones unturned' in search of a solution to GHG emission, that could benefit the whole planet.

Currently we're also finishing the development of containerized GreenCold chilling stations, used for crops/milk storage and drinking water generation.
The input is thermal solar power or waste heat from engines, so it's 100% free.

@LandGenerator: Very interesting and certainly the need for such cooling and water generation will only keep growing in coming years.

I am involved in the Energy Research and Applications sector. We just had put on a
Fortune 500 company's letterhead and signed the request for the Visa from the Energy
Advisor to the President of Nigeria to visit the afore mentioned company regarding a
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). We can reduce fossil fuel use by Solar Thermal systems.
These can be backed up by finite fossil or renewable fuels. The CO2 could be captured
and used to feed Algae Bioreactors. Downstream products result to include Jet Fuel.
Finance is important and is part of the Triple Bottom Lines that measure benefit to the
Planet, the People and a Profit. These three in a balance that is positive, results in
a truly sustainable development and can be expandable. I am the International Director
for the Regional Sustainable Energy Center of Excellence (RSECE). www.rsece.org

Hi,
I would just like to confirm the last date of the revision period. The message that I received in my inbox states "Thursday, August 21, 11:59 PM Eastern Time", while the website states August 20th.
Thank you

@BGK: You may be noticing https://www.climatecolab.org/community/-/blogs/semi-finalist-revision-period-now-open where it lists "a revision deadline of Thursday, August 21, 11:59 PM Eastern Time" but as you seem to have figured out, there was a bug or communication error setting the effective deadline around midnight (0:00 AM) on Thursday, August 21, GMT, which is around 8pm Aug 20 EDT. I'm glad you noticed it and were able to get at least some revisions in before that cutoff!

| Iam involved in enegy auditing and DSM for the mitigation of climate change. Major energy/cost savings proposals have been identified for possible energy savings.I suggest to fellow citizen to opt for solar vehicle having solar batteries to their vehicles and to the existing vehicle we can replace rechargable solar batteries and incandescent bulbs/CFLS/LEDS of same voltage instead of halogen bulbs, head lamps TO VEHICLES and flash lights and also for adverstising ,street lights and decorative lights. And finally traffic signals lights with incandescent bulbs to generate zero emissions without effecting the existing lighting system.
