If an outsider could collect 100% of the savings of creating an energy efficient building. It would create a market for this kind of work.


Description

Summary

  This is a win/win for business and the environment.  It's green energy and capitalist.  By creating a solid legal framework for property owners to place energy efficiency of their property into a marketplace.  It will create jobs, energy efficiency and promote investments in the science of energy efficiency.

  In the current marketplace, it is the property owner's benefit to create an energy efficient building.  In many cases the technical skills and upfront costs are too high for the property owner to make the switch to an energy efficient building.

  In these cases, a solid legal framework could be created which creates a sector for a new kind of business, which collect the money lost by energy inefficiency.

  At the very most, the entire money lost through energy inefficiencies would be transferred to the green technology owners and employees.

  At the very least, utility companies should allow homeowners to put their anonymous energy inefficiency published on a public website, along with whatever data is significant to estimating the energy efficiency of the home ( home size, installed home appliances ).  This system also allows the homeowners to be anonymously contacted, with very simple banning and unsubscribe features.

  Companies which make energy efficiency estimates could also operate in this space.  One idea is to create a company which operates as a third party which acts as an intermediary between consumers and green businesses.  Another idea is to have a company who offers free energy saving estimates via flying automated drones with Amazon Fire phones, and with the Firefly app, detect all of the appliances in the home (As long as all of the doors are open and the house is vacant).

  Profits for these companies could be collected via a payment plan which locks the homeowner’s energy bill at current levels, or collects a percentage of installation, product and maintenance fees.

What actions do you propose?

First a highly precise cost/benefit analysis should be conducted to determine who the opponents of this campaign are going to be, and keep these people out of the information loop.  

Secondly, with the help of experts, craft a campaign to get whomever benefits from this campaign (utilities, the chamber of commerce, state and public officials) to create a large scale campaign which informs the public of this new sector of business and constructs the legal framework to protect this new kind of business.

On a small scale, try to find energy providers within the United States who are willing to partner in launching this endeavor.  Launching these campaigns in each of their energy districts.


Who will take these actions?

The campaign staff, needs to create press kits and viral internet videos to create a media buzz around this new business venture.


Where will these actions be taken?

A large campaign on all forms of media.  Energy efficient estimators are hired and trained in every major metropolitan city, to meet customer demand.


How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

I recently discovered that my grandmother wastes about $100 per month in energy inefficiency.
$100 per month x 12 months, that's $1200 per year.
If I apply this fix to 100 homes, my income becomes $120,000 per year.  If I managed 100 people applying this fix at a 10% fee, my income is $1,200,000.
If I managed 100 people who were managers at 10% fee, my income is $12,000,000.  At this point 10,000 homes would have been made energy efficient.

What are the proposal’s costs?

Hopefully with government support, the ads could fit into the government allocated budget for advertising, including features on public radio and television.   Another idea would be to recoup the losses on buying the ads with a tax on the new businesses operating in this space.  Without government support, a small portion of profits could be allocated for advertising money.


Time line

This should start in a test city and grow to meet public demand.  If a year passes and this is successful, more cities could begin supporting this business model and perhaps introduce supportive legislation.
