What actions do you propose?
To use human waste which is a plenty resource in biogas production as a way to mitigate climate change and improve sanitation in Kenyan secondary schools and the rest of the world.This idea will also enhance economic sustainability as the cost of paying electricity will be cut,at the same time reduce costs of buying woodfuel.Digesters will be constructed to produce methane gas which is a greenhouse gas and used as a fuel to cook and light ovens at night. I propose that, in future,the ministry of education to incorporate this idea in the schools administartion, so that we can replicate this idea in most of our secondary schools.
Who will take these actions?
Any person can replicate this idea,so long as they have the expertise and skills required to implement it.In our case,my clasmates,our lecturer and i will implement this project as we get the needed funds. We also intend to sell this idea to a local city councils to enable them manage the human wastes in our urban centrs wher we have a large population.
Where will these actions be taken?
We will like this project to be implimemted in Kenyan secondary schools before we move to other places of concern.Other places where i see it can be replicated is in urban apartments.The idea can assist in urban planning and management of human waste in this areas.
What are other key benefits?
Improved sanitation,reduced deforestation as we will be having a substitute of fuel rather than the use of woodfuel,reduced cost of paying electricty bills in schools and improved food production as the slurry can be used as a fertiliser,methane gas can also be used in science laboratories to light burnsen burners and ovens while doing practicals at night,Isolation and treatment of wastes, eliminating disease causing organisms for example E-coli bacteria and reducing odors,top soil management and enrichment,increased food production hence improving nutrition of students, big boost to organic farming which is envoronmentally friendly,improved in indoor air quality as by now there will be a decline in smoke produced when compaired to woodfuel,poverty alleviation by employing people to manage this facility in schools,reduction in the pollution of surface water bodies, where these organic wastes infiltrates into,reduction of green house gas emissions responsible for global climate change.
How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?
I cannot ascertain this because we've not not started the construction of digesters,but since the gas will be tapped as fuel,we can be able to measure the amount produced.
What are the proposal’s costs?
It's $150000,the money will be used to buy the materials required to construct digesters.The real proposal which contains the budget may be provided as a proof to show this if need arises.
It will take one year to construct a digester and all that is required to make it workable for production of the biogas. The work plan is there and i shall avail it when need arise.
I ussually see biogas production from cow dung, which is mainly promoted by KENFAP a local NGO in Kenya, and its destined to rural farmers, but i will like to transfer this technology from Rwanda prisons to Kenyan schools.It has been done in Cyangugu and Nsida prisons,showing its ability to solve all this environmental problems stated in my proposal.
