The problem:
Residential electricity, HVAC and road transport are responsible for more than 20% of world GHG emissions [1]. This is the part that people have direct control over. In order to cut back on these emissions we personally need to take measures. This requires joint effort.
Yet, majority of people are not aware of their personal impact, or its magnitude. The up-to-date data about emissions are not readily available, or are not served in easy to understand manner.
Hence, the prerequisite for any action or change in non-industrial sector is making data readily available and easily understandable, and consequently raising awareness about our control over GHG emissions.
What we propose?
We suggest augmenting the existing public landmarks and buildings with glancable information about GHG emissions, but in a subtle, non-intrusive way. How do we do that?
Public buildings and landmarks worldwide are lit with randomly changing colors for the sole purpose of looking good. The sequence and choice of colors is devoid of any sense. We propose to give those lights a meaning by making them react to the changes in GHG emissions. E.g., the buildings can glow red when the CO2 emissions are high, yellow when moderate, or green when low.
People are passing public buildings and landmarks every day. They perceive them as culturally significant and important. These are also highly visible structures, both from near and far away. By implementing this proposal, in addition to being beautifully lit, our buildings and landmarks will provide us with easy to understand, ‘in your face’ information about emissions.
